Kinda funny about the hip joint idea.... I'd thought about the hip joint thing... but mine is Vitallium. Posted in the fabrication board about welding it and apparently it'd be difficult/expensive to find the stuff to weld it with.
The one on my jeep might be made of the same stuff...I'm not sure, my dad just had a hole with threads drilled into it and screwed it into the stock shaft...I imagine that is easier than welding it.
Heres a pic of the shifter I made (based on a factory peice)... it looks beat up, but thats just when it was still dirty after I made it... its actually smooth as glass, and painted

I would want the ball facing up most definitely (not sure what yours is)... the spike at the bottom is way too thin to drill a decent sized hole and tap it. The spike is only 3/4" by 1/4" until it thickens to meet the ball at the top (it'd be way too short if I cut it and drilled it that high). Maybe use a die to thread the spike.... dont know how much that would weaken it though... Got it in a metal scrapyard and someone had been using it as a hammer (some small intentions on the ball)... so I think its got some pretty good strength to it. *shrug*
I got to thinking about the 8ball idea, and came up with this. What if you was to use the end of a pool stick. Just like the bottom end of it. Not one of those plain ones but like one of the Bud ones or racing ones...... Justa idea.......Anyone care to Photoshop this?
