Beginning of the 4th gen dash swap tech /faq page

ok,heres the beginning of all this... il lstart by letting everyone know ALL the 4th gen dash wiring i got rid of,i cut off the gauge cluster wiring,and the hvac wiring {i intendded to resplice everything} you have too,only thing that will actually plug in with zero mods,is the heater blower motor switch. EVERYTHING else must be spliced or rewired...for now ill go into the actual gauge cluster wiring,over the next few days ill go into the hvac controls,headlight wiring,ducting,rear defrost,and hatch pop,and the various mods ive done here and there to make mine a little better then the others ive seen thus far...

right now im going to do a schematics of my 3rd gen 84 t/a dash{dont worry,ill do others,but this is what im 100% factual on right now}

3RD GEN desc and color 4TH GEN desc and color

SES light~Brown/white-----------------SES light~Brown/white

Fuel gauge~ pink------------------------Fuel gauge~purple

Oil pressure gauge~ tan---------------Oil pressure gauge~tan

Water tmp gauge~ dark green-------water tmp gauge~dark green

Tachometer~white----------------------Tachometer~white

Ground~ black---------------------------Ground~ black
Ground~ black/white-------------------Ground~black/white {for the speedo and tach}

Switched 12volts~pink/black-------Switched 12 volts~pink/black{note...the 4th gen dash cluster has2 pink wires for switched{ignition run/start}12 volts,i spliced both of them into ONE of my switched 12 volt power wires from the stock harness,one powers the dash and the instruments,the other powers the tach and speedo BOTH pink wires must have a switched 12 volts of power,or it wont work properly}

Constant 12volts~orange-------------Constant 12volts~orange

Check gauges/Alt~red------------------Check gauges/alt~red

Right turn indicator~dark blu----------Right turn indicator~ dark blu

Left turn indicator~ light blu-----------Left turn indicator~ light blu

Hi beam indicator~ light green-------Hi beam indicator~light green

alright,off the top of my head this is all i can solidly remember,tommoroww when i go to work ill bring my diagrams home and write some more stuff down,theres alot more,this should help those out with troubles getting there dash wired up,the basics are all the same for almost any year 3rd gen dash,asuming you have gauges,and not idiot lights. only difference will be the speedometer wiring

Speedometer~ N/a right now---------Speedometer~ dark green/white

Doesn't an 84 run a cable speedo, how'd you get that to work with the electric gauges, or did you just swap in a vss and all the wiring from a newer car?

I have done ths swap before and want to help some people out here . Tip: I tried and tried to get the headlight switch wired up to the 3rd gen harness with no luck, I also have foglights so it didnt help. The 4th and 3rd gen wiring for the lights are totally different. Here is what I did. I used the 3rd gen headlight switch. I made 2 small brackets to hold it to the inside of the dash and then cut the rod in half. I took the 4th gen **** and pressed it on the rod. I also used the 3rd gen foglight switch as well and made a small tab to hold that on as well. Now when youin the car and looking at the new 4th gen dash and you want to turn your lights on, all you have to do is pull it out like youuse too. I found this to be a lot easier and SAFER then trying to deal with splicing wires for the lights. PLus its 2 less plugs you have to cut. FOr some reason, the 3rd gens put a relay between the lights and switch. the 4th gens run a power wire right from the switch to the lights. I spent 3 days trying to get it right and always ended up without a dimmer or no highbeams or ALL lights on at once or light inside foglight switch was backwards. It was PITA, try my idea and see how you like it guys. That hardest part was making little tabs to hold the switch behind the dash.

Bottled, I got my headlights working in like 5 minutes. The dimmer was a bitch though.... until I got a diagram then it was pretty easy. I think my dimmer is broken though. When I turn it down past 3/4 it turns the dash lights completely off. Otherwise, everything else about the switch works perfect... brights, marker lights, domelight. I don't have foglights, but looking at the wiring diagram it should be cake when I do put them in.

This is the same style dash you had (mines from a 95z), but I'm putting it in my firebird. That might make a difference.

wow thats weird, I know I am pretty capable of wiring things up where colors dont match and I know how to read wiring diagrams but I could not for th elife of me get that thing to work the corrct way. There wasnt even the same amount of wires to splices between the two setups. At one point I got them to work but the light on the foglight switch was backwards and I didnt want ANY problems at all. I already lost my last 91z to a car fire from a faulty auto start install from a local shop. But anyways, glad you got it to work. If you dont mind posting the scematic for it just so I can see where I went wrong.

Wow awesome so far!!! I'm going to be doing this swap in about 2 months. If I can get enough info than I won't have someone do it for me (that'll run me ) I was just afraid of everything not matching up... My electrical knowledge involves car audio, and that's about where it ends. But all these tech articles together, I might just be able to pull it off :P

I believe if you have TBI, the speedometer from a 4th gen will need a Dakota Digital box to function. Just a heads up.

Faded, I looked at some notes from my swap and I have a few different colored wires. The headlight wiores are the same but not the dimmer and foglight wires. I think this is where it got confusing for me. My 4th gen foglight switch has a yellow, brown, lt green, grey and black wires. There where more wires then what the 3rd gen switch had. This made it a bit more involved in trying to get it to work. As for the TBI cars only needing a SGI 5 box, That is incorroct. I have a TPI harness and I HAD to use the SGI 5 box. I know of a lot more guys on here that had to use it as well. For anyone that needs a SGI 5 box, I have one for sale. $50. works perfect

where did you have to use the SGI-5 box at... i have a 91Z TPI... and from everything i gather it would depend on what cluster you are using if you need the box or not.. 93-97 LT1 cluster you shouldnt need it... but the 98 and up LS1 cluster you would for the tach. also the v-6 clusters would need it for the tach... if this is not correct please let me know... cause then i would need to get a box... i have 2 clusters.. a 93 TA cluster and a 98 camaro v-6 cluster. thanks for any help

I am running a T56 so that is why I had to use the box. I guess I should ave said that before. Also, I dont remember is I used the box when I put the 4th gen dash in. I know I had the box with the T56 and stock cluster but as far as the 4th gen dash I cant rememeber now. I think I did
