I was, but took it all back out and swapped back to a 145 cluster for now, I could not get happy with a gauge cluster arrangement. I will probably mess with it some more at some point.

Yeah, they're 96-97 Honda Accord Clear EURO bumper lights up front.


Sometimes it sure feels like it; but hopefully not forever, no. The plan is thus: I'm getting a fiberglass front nose and fenders so that I can smooth/blend the seam and add Tiburon vents behind the wheels. 90-92 IROC ground effects under the doors. Fiberglass rear quarter panels and rear bumper, again to blend the seam. Custom taillights that are reminiscent of the first generation Firebird; and blended in with the rear bumper/quarters. Notchback (whenever that's finally ready) with Z28 high rise spoiler. This past weekend I removed my Z3 mirrors and replaced them with fourth generation mirrors because they were starting to crack. Metallic Pearl White paint with ghost flames eventually - I also want to look into getting some of that 'reflective' material (like the stuff you can see on police cars and highway signs) thrown in with the flames so as lights play across it it has a cool effect.

I've been real busy with work and getting my MCSE certification so haven't had a lot of time lately but hopefully this summer I'll get a bunch more time to mess with her.

The 1986-1989 Camaro kits (and firebirds) are that easy to install. The kits are unique in that they have pull tabs to expose adhesive. You position them as needed, then pull the strips to mount them.

I sent u a PM, but I just had a qwik question... these gauge overlays... what color do they shine at night? same as stock? if so, is it dimmer since there is now a peice in front of it? Any night pics? Please let me know thanks

The illumination on 90-92 Camaros is a little weak (only 4 bulbs). To be honest, the 1990-92 kits aren't the best application of our overlays. When installed, the dark letters do appear yellowed (by the factory applique).

The factory illumination color remains, but it is dimmed 25%. Installing brighter bulbs on these models is recommended. Although your factory bulb holders are non-serviceable type (holder, and glass bulb are spot welded togther). You can use bulb holders from another year Camaro, Firebird (1985-88, 1984-1992).

MacEwen's stuff is top shelf, I had it in my car for a couple of years until I went to an autometer setup. Now with stock stuff back in again, I will probably pick up another set. Sure, you can find cheaper, but you won't find this quaility for cheaper. :hail:

Too bad there isn't any aftermarket clusters for 90-92...I'll probably end up fabricating my own...

I'd rather buy the setup for the 82-89 and put it in, but I don't know if it will work in the 91.

any body done it on the late models yet?

Well,

I'm not one to say "that wont work", but you will have major issues to resolve with connectors/wiring. Then theres the problem of the 1967-1989 clusters being cable driven. You'd have some issues trying to figure out how to get the CC working again. Anything is possible.

I dont think Dakota Digital has done a 90-92 Camaro cluster yet.

I'll put it this way....nothing....is controlled by the computer. I have a carb setup, and the TCC is by a switch...so the conversion...doesn't really matter if the computer is bypassed. I would just like to know if the autometer gauge cluster would fit. If it fits, then I'll wire the stuff manually. Probably going to a painless harness soon anyway to get the computer out for good, and to have good wires for everything else.

Yes, my MacEwen overlays were installed in 10 minutes, very hot looking, simple and i get complements all day long on them..

Dont' have any night shots of them sorry.. I just have stock bulbs behind them and it looks like a flouresent light behind them at night very pleased..

Well they're not all that "custom" perse, but I've got a panel out of a '91 Firebird in my '84 (running electronic speedo for my T-56) and I've got an a-pillar pod with digital A/F ratio gage, and a digital temp guage/fan controller:
(please pardon the NASTY floor mats...they're keeping the new carpet clean )

i know a dude with a GTA that did amazing custom gauges. the car came stock with a diital gauges but then he took a normal TA gauge cluster and made his own digital gauges for it the mounted the cluster on the passanger side. u guys gotta see this car. not to mention the system in it! i am going to try to get pics of it tomorrow 4 sure. he got it new so there like the whole care is custom, even has remot built into horn button.

Quadgoat did you have to repin the dash harness and did you have to replace the sending units fot the cluster to work? I would like to do the swap on my 85 but would like to know what I need to change to do it first.

Yep, I repinned the instrument panel connectors so they'd work with the '91 panel. It was time consuming, but not too hard, you've just got to know what color wires in the harness do what, and then trace the circuit board on the back of the panel to find out where the wires should go. I didn't have to change any sending units because I already had full gages on the original '84 panel. If you have idiot lights on your current dash you'll need to replace the sending units for the gages to work. It's not too bad of a swap actually. I like the newer gages a lot better! True, good call, I forgot about the speedometer issue. One of the main reasons I did the panel swap was because I needed an electronic speedo for my T-56. I used the stock T-56 VSS with a Dakota Digital box to convert the signal for the '91 dash. If you have a cable driven speedo right now you'll have to figure out how you want to drive the electronic speedomter. You can get a unit that goes inline in the speedo cable and generates a signal you can use, which might be the easiest option. That's the hardest part of the swap if your tranny currently has a cable speedo output and not an electronic VSS. Thanks for reminding me of that John...I forgot about it because it wasn't an issue for me.

I knew about the vss issue and can handle that part. Now I just need to go hunt down a cluster and get started. I have the pinout of the 86 and up clusters but I could really use one for the 82-85 cluster if anyone has one.

Here's a link to the pinout diagram for the 1984 instrument panel with full gages from my 1984 Pontiac service manual. Hopefully that will help you figure some of it out.
