Yet another 4th gen interior swap

ok... i just started swaping in a 98 camaro dash, console, door panels and seats...right now i have the light switch, fog switch, locks, and power windows wired and everything works perfect like it was in a 4th gen. going to do the hvac wireing and mirrors then start on the cluster wich is from a 95 T/A.... what i need to know is on the hvac wireing, where does the dark green wire from the 3rd gen hvac go to... i know it is for the coolant fan relay but there is no where on the 4th gen relay to hook it to.... also for the mirrors, is there any definitave answer to weather or not the 4th gen switch will work correct or if it will work at all? any help on those would be great.. and if anyone has any questions on the other wireing just let me know.. once i get some pics loaded from my camera i will put some up... thanks

I can't answer the hvac question but I tried to get the 4th gen mirror controls to work and using every wiring combo, I could only get one mirror to move up and down and the other to go side to side.

I've got a 4th gen mirror were to play with, maybe I'll take it apart and see if the motors are interchangable. I just need to find a 3rd gen mirror to play with.

havnt thought about trying to change the motors in the mirrors.. might have to try that also.. i can get one from both a 3rd gen and a 4th gen this weekend to play with.. i was playing with the 4th gen switch and the multimeter and it almost seems as though there must be some sort of built in relay or some other wireing somewhere that isolates the signal so it will work on one mirror at a time with all controls instead of one up down and the other right left.. maybe one of us can figure it out.. as for the hvac thing.. i know that the 3rd gen wire that there is no connection for on the 4th gen goes to the coolant fan relay... wonder if i could just put a switch on it to fool it into thinking it is on... that sgr switch on my 98 dash trim plate might work good for that...hmmm... let me know if you come up with something...

I've got both a 93 and 92 service manual here. I'll be doing my swap later this year. They both work the same, but the wiring is different. Hopefully this will help you out and hopefully all 4th gen mirror switches are the same.

Thanks,

Kevin D.

Camaro's have the power mirror control all ready in the door panel don't they? That might account for the differences of where the wires were going. I was assuming they would all run to the doors from the center console.

Glad you got it working!

for the speedo... what setup are you using? v-8 or v-6 cluster? and you have a v-6 motor right? if you had a v-8.. and used a cluster from an LT1 from 93-97 all you need to do is follow the wireing diagrams... now... question is do you have cable or electric speedo in there now? if it is electric you are fine if it is cable then you have to get an electric vss ( which i happen to have for an auto tranny as well as one in a WC T-5 tranny that i am trying to get rid of) if you need any help on the speedo thing let me know and ill try to get more detailed.. defroster.. yes i have the diagrams.. first let me know what year you are going to be putting in so i get you correct ones...

Okie doke, i've got an 85 bird with a cable speedo unit...i know i need to swap in the speed sensor from an auto electric speedo car, and i've got it here....little curious on the gear though. I saw ur maro was an 86 and was assuming you'd have cable also (unless u've swapped it out at a different time) and if u had swapped it, what all did u use to get things working right. For mine, i'm thinking , VSS, buffer box, speedo and accesories and boom, i'll be in business...but people have been jumping over whether to change the gears in the tailshaft, and i'd rather have to get under the car one time vs. many.

On the defroster, my cars an 85 and the dash that's in it is a 95ish maybe 96....can't really remmber, however it's not the newest style.

Also, can u confirm that the v6 and v8 4th gens use a v8 tach signal, that's the only conclusion i can come to, and the only fix would be a buffer box (like dakota digital) . I do know that the ls1 cars use a 4 cylinder signal, however, i'm reading excessively high on a v6 cluster, with my v6 car. othes have had the same problem, (3.1 swappers)

for a v-6 car you definatly will need a dakota digital box... for your vss... it is my understanding that the gears are different between the cable and electric vss so you would have to change them... might as well though they are only 3.40 each from the dealer. jsut make sure you have the right ones. for your defroster.... i dont hve it in front of me.. but if i remember correctly.... you hook the purple to purple... orange to orange... and i believe the black to black and the third gen will have a pink wire... that is hooked to the other 4th gen wire... ill confirm and post alittle later...

wow!! GREAT work man!!!! I have had everything I needed for almost a year, but been neglecting it due toseeing the HVAC problems. So your saying you got ALL of it to work?? I am SUPER PUMPED!!! My wife will be having our baby this week (hopefully) and I'll be taking off work to help her when she gets back home, so I would REALLY like to do this swap while I'm off work. can you send me pics, and/or list wiring codes like you did for the mirrors above?? PLEASE!!!! I have a 88 GTA that I am putting a 98 firebird dash in. I have the 98 wire harness, power window switches, and mirrors as well. Congrats on getting it all done!!!!!!

let me know what you need exactly... yes the hvact is working correctly.. i just have to extend the hot/cold cable a little bit as it is about 1 1/2 inches short... as for hooking it up all you have to do is take a bolt that fits the hole in the forth gen connector and cut it off and jb weld it to the 3rd gen door...and it will work correct.. as for the blend mode just take a 4th gen 2 way diverter and place it in inplace of the 3rd gen... now you have blend mode.. i havent hooked up the grey vac line that controls the hot water entering as i will probably take the valve out unless i find a way to turn the vac on and off with a switch of some sort... anyways let me know any questions and what wireing you need. it is not as bad as it seems to do the swap.. just take time and do it right and you will be very happy with it all.

Looking good. Knowing everything can be made to be functional is getting me thinking about putting a 4th gen dash in my car. What have you done about the gaps near the a-pillars though? I saw someone made some filler peices out of fiberglass but i haven't heard or seen it in a while.

as for the gaps by the a pillers, i am custom makeing the a piller useing the 4th gen one.. once i get it done i will put some pics up to show what it looks like, but just mocking it up how i want it it looks good like its supposed to be that way.. anything is possible if you work at it... just like the mirrors... everything kept saying they wouldnt work.. but i figured it out ( kinda accidently) but regardless.. they do work correct.. once i get everything in right ill post more pics.. and if you have any ?? let me know

So, you're getting your hvac working (some pics of that would be nice) i was having the hardest timing splicing in my vaccum lines into the 4th gen setup, infact, i'm still trying to figure out how to do it...nevermind, i might have just had an thought on that......And you're using a 4th gen cable on the thirdgen door correct? i might rig that up before winter hits.....Then i've gotta think about getting the routing done on the ducting even though i have it, it seemed like it would have been a hassle to put in when i did the dash. And are u for sure on that defroster wiring? I had a blue wire that didn't match up to anything, however when i'd turn on the defroster, it'd defrost, but drew a lot of amps from the alt. Eventually, something went pop, the guage fuse blew, and the rear defrost went bye-bye...gotta find what blew up, and no, it's not the guage fuse, it's been replaced.

yeh, i'm assuming that the wiring must be different. I got my illumination wire hooked up, and it lit up the little defroster light, i'm not sure what the blue wire did, however i'm thinking it might have been for the defrost timer. Do you konw about that? I do know that when i'd turn on my defrost that the Volts would drop really low, something was definately not hooked up right, and finally, i had it on (found out it did really work) and the stupid thing went pop, next thing i know the light doesn't come on, the power doesn't drop, and my hatch pop doesn't work (which i think is wired into the rear defrost) so i'm assuming that it blew a ground....maybe, still need to find out why.

Oh the HVAC stuff, my vac lines were really small, and didn't want to come off the little rubber thing they were connected to, however, i don't know if i had the right connection in the bin. I need to find another 4th gen setup, and pull everything for the hvac system and see if i can rework it into mine. If you've got, or can get pics of your setup it'd really help me along on that....it's officially the last thing (minus the speedo) that i need to get my dash working the way i want it to, also need that dakota box on for the tach issues too, but i know where its supposed tobe for various highway speeds. So, i'm good for now.

88GTA to 98 Firebird dash/wiring harness.

what color goes to what color for dash cluster, defrost, trunk popper, and HVAC. Pics could prolly tell the story a lil easier if you want to e-mail them to me, or just a nice lil type up like you did for the mirris would work well too.

THANKS A MILLION!!!!!!!!!:hail: :hail: :hail:

Hey Camaro86vette. Do you remember the measurements you had to cut the back top part of the dash? I'm doing the same myself but just need to know how much to cut off. Thanks.
