New idea for the interior what do you think???
Has anybody every tried to, NOt Spray paint, but buy vinyl and try to recover thier back panels. i mean all of them. vinyl only cost at the most 15.00 a yard 50" WIDE. AND I THINK IT WOULD ONLY TAKE ABOUT 6 YARD FOR THE ENTIre rear of the car. Ive tried spray painting and lets just say it was a failed atempt. and looks real cheap expecially when i have deep scratches from the tonneu cover. is vinyl a way to go....or maybe 4th gen panels any one have any idea's beside hope my car gets picked for TLC's overhaulin one day!

I think its feasable and would look great if done right, just dont know whats the best product to use to stick them on there,I know the product will have to withstand heat and colds and bond well to vinyl and plastic..........

Well I tried and fail miserably. I had vinyl that looked like black leather it was cheap so I got it. I used a blow-dryer to heat it up and try to stretch the fabric over my pieces. If you would get the vinyl to hot you would rip it therefore making it so you would have to have wrinkles in some spots. The wrinkles looked like crap. There are just to many curves on the interior panels. The parts that dint have wrinkles looked so amazing tho. If u try it get a very stretchable fabric and make sure its thin 2. Be prepared to speed at lest 2-3 hours a piece to make the look right and don’t go cheap when it comes to the spray adhesive. Get 3m it might be expensive but it will work alot better for u then the cheep wal-mart brand stuff. I would say not to wast your time but if u do, do it all the more power to you

I covered all my panels, headliner, door panels in tweed , i also sewed the tweed for the sunvisors, t-top shades and back of the rear seat. (pix on webpage, link in sig)
looks great IMO and no problems for 2 years now. i used 3M spray adhesive to glue it down.

Yea davebird dose have on of the nicest interior on this site. Although ive never seen that pic of the speaker covers before. Have u ever thought of dieing the tweed on the speaker covers a black so that it would continue the thyme of your seats. Your interior looks great but the more I look at it, it almost seems like to much gray tweed it just need to be broken up a bite. I like It a lot tho. I think I might have read a post were u died the door panels black know that I remember right or was that some on else?

vinyl can be hard to stretch and make look right. tweed seems much easier to work with, but doesnt look nearly as good. the really good vinyl you can hardly tell a difference from leather other then the price tag.
something that im trying right now is using the vinyl and cover the areas where the old camaro interiors used to have carpet glued down. im just looking for some spray adhesive that works better then the $13 cans of 3m. are you guys using it only in very hot garages? my shop runs around 68 degrees and the adhesive doesnt work at all even after the plastic is prepped.

Ya know i was thinking about it.......vinyl does have a plus in where all you need to do is clean it with soapy water ....the problem with tweed i guess would be is the infamoud t-top leaks or any kinda leaks that are imfamous i know i have them......at the back hatch. if that stuff stays in the fabric im sure it can get smelly after a while

I've started some spots and considered doing the rest. I just have not been able to attempt it. Here's some shots of what I have done. I did some of the door panels, two toned the headliner, covered the sail panels and began laying out at least the carpet inlay on the cargo area.

that two tone grey in the head liner looks kinda wired. i dont knwo wrinkly..maybe tweed or some kind of fabric is the better wya...AHHH desicions desicions...Anything but Kylon fusion or any type of paint(i didnt want people putting in thier input on the paint). anybody every try and shove fourth gen panels in thier......or i wonder if anything can be fabricated from scratch all together all the way around.......cheap alluminum (covered or texture painted) with rubber stopers so it doesnt vibrate..even maybe.if it was alluminum..it would make the car lighter!!! hmmm ideas i deas!!!!!!!i know some more people must be stuck in this predicament..shoot them out thier!

I was in the same predictament and used krylon fusion.............................j/k
I think the best and only way on solving this imfamous hatch panel problem is by getting a new or decent set of panels, unless u must have something on there whether its carpet, vinyl, leather ,twwed to fulfill youre interior expectations........

i say vinyl and a real good glue on the panels should work great.. as for all the plastics,
dash? im prob sure somthing custom could be done there..
the theme for my car is all black, pearl white, and white colors,
i dont think it would be that hard? but as for stitching and stuff i dont kno if i would leave that stuff up to myself

a tip with the vinyl: Use a credit cards edge and run it down the vinyl to press the wrinkles out. Or use a sticker squeegie(sp?) to do it. <--The things u use to put on stickers and graphics.
edit: do it as u are laying it down, starting from one end to the other. should get it nice and tight for the most part.

I haven't read through all the posts in this topic, so if anyone already mentioned this... sorry. But Allante type vinyl is very easy to stretch. If you use a heat gun, you can stretch it even more. 3M has a spray adhesive, #8088, that works very well. I use this type of vinyl and adhesive anytime I am covering a piece with multiple curves/angles.

Hello everyone, this is my first post!
Has anyone ever thought about smoothing all of the scratches on your old plastic panels and then applying a texture before painting any color or combo of colors you want?
I have seen some cool textures that can be easily applied such as hammered metal, stone, and wrinkle finish.

Another way to go is to use a servie like Pheonix Imaging. They can put a pattern on any metal or plastic panel. THey have a few to choose from, such as brushed aluminum. Only thing is, they are really expensive, so you gotta start saving your pennies.
http://www.phoenix-image.com/
The guys on my Dakota (daily driver only) forum did a group buy with them and everything seemed to go well. They all liked what they got back.

spray painted mine...just finished actually and it lookes better than the factory black plastics. wanted to go to an all black interior and this wa sa perfect solution. i dont have a lot of traffic iun my car so im not worried about it holding up but for the armrests and rocker panels im going to have to buy factory black since those are high traffic areas. i used duplicolor vinyl and fabric gloss black.
but recovering in vinyl does give a totally different look and if done right im sure it looks awesome!

Dang...and here I thought most of you knew about my car...I put vinyl where GM put the carpet on some of the Camaros...
I used Hampton vinyl that I got that matched my seat covers from Hawk's!
I had previously done the same mod with my old grey interior.
Link to my interior page with info on how!
Also this site is up for show off of the week! Place your votes & help me out!

hey redraif.. why when people take out their seat belts for the back seats do they leave them crappy squares in there... like i know theres a big hole there but still.. theres gota be a way to form something with the contour without the square over it. i say vinyl over all the plastic and keep it 1 color your making me dizy lol it does look great tho.. the paint on the door alittle tacky

The black boxes for the seat belts in the rear cargo area I wanted. I have red rear seatbelts that I have been waiting to install. There was never a bright red option code for the non shoulder harness version. And black rear belts with red fronts looked bad! So I chose the black interior panels that would allow me to run the shoulder harness rear seat belts! They were not in yet when I took the pics!
As far as what to do about the holes they leave behind if you ahve a later car adn want to remove that piece... Well if you are lucky get replacement panels from a earlier year junkyard car & replace them. Or if you are good, you could cover that area with a plastic panel that you heat to match the contour of the existing panel & glue down. With a dremel you would ahve to cut down teh lip on the panle where the old box used to meet up. Then fill the seam your new plastic panel leaves behind. Maybe with a 2 part epoxy (what I would recommend to glue on panel to the other to start with) Then cover the thing solid like I did my grey cargo panels. If done carefully, no one could tell! Though i must say covering the rear panels on a car with those boxes was easier then doing it as a solid piece on my grey ones. Thank goodness the nauga soft was more forgiving! Also the fuzz on the back ouf teh nauga soft (hampton does not have) make the glue hold it to the panel better. Though trimming edges is harder....
Hope that helps!

Oh & if I could find some perfect red boxes from a 91-92 Camaro, I would mount them there instead of the black so it would not break up the red! But I've had no luck on a seperate set yet! Going to talk to Hawks about it! Plus they are not an exact match color wise. Right next to each other might look bad! Look back @ the pics of my rear armrest as opposed to the hampton om the cargo panel... Its a smidge off!
Next time I mess with the roof...it will get black nauga soft on it! Nor sure what color on the sail panel speaker covers....red or black! That and i have not figured out how to get teh sound to pass thru the vinyl. I mean if water can't pass thru it...mid and highs will get blocked if I cover that piece!
