Should I restore or mod?
This is a 1989 Camaro IROC-Z 1LE R7U players car from canada. It was stolen in 2003 by some WI thieves. Miraculously, it was recovered almost a year later in Balsalm Lake, WI pretty much intact. The Trans was barely attatched to the motor. Looks like they were trying to put in an auto because they snapped the third gear synchro, and burned out the clutch. They also tried to paint it to look like an older Z-28. Now, There is only the hidden VIN on the firewall. So the question now is, do I rebuild it or do I Modify it and put newer (92) Body pieces on it and a newer interior? The fenders and the hood are both damaged otherwise there would be no question on what to do.

The engine is still in good condition. The Fluids are clean and I plan to fire it up soon.

personally, i'd restore it. there was another thread about the players cars recently, and from what i understand they are extremely hard to find. i'd do whatever it takes to put it back in origional shape.

The cops broke the windshield trying to take out the fake vin the thieves put in there. i was p.o'ed so i threw a brick through the windshield(the big hole) after i got it home. they caused almost as much damage as the thieves. they took off the hood (i put it on and just recently just took it back off, to start dissasembling it) and damaged the right fender.

This is after i took the windshield out this afternoon. thats my footprint on the dash. cut my hands up( not wearing gloves, did it out of disgust) so i climbed on the motor and dash and kicked it until it came loose. (when it comes to my cars i get real defensive.)

The thieves left this in the engine bay, as well as a crack pipe in the runner valley below the intake As if that weren't bad enough, they left a fully loaded AK-47 Clip in the trunk. i dont know if i can post that pic here so click on th WWW link below to see all the pics.

this is a bunch of crap that was in the trunk. the wing is off of a firebird. they were trying to make the car look older, as if that would hide it better. but the wing i dont understand.

The fake VIN was because they were trying to make the car into an older one, i assume they had the title to an older one. the original vin plate is history. the cops kept it because it was 'part of the investigation'. Jerks. They had the car for three months before they called to tell me they found it. they called me in june, and they recovered it in march2004. they painted the pass side lower ground effects grey like an older Z-28

see the grey lowers? if you look close, you can see the faded outlines of th SSGT (showroom stock gt class) and the track stickers from the Mid-Ohio track where it won the 96-97 Valvoline runoff championship (so the papers the dealer i bought it from said. course he said there were only 52 and there are really 74 5Speeds out there)

well the biggest question here is how are you going to get a new vin plate for it, that will be the biggest deciding factor on wether or not you can ever drive the car on the streets again EVER.

If your not going to restore it, trade it off to need for speed. A rare classic like that needs to either be used or restored. It sounds like he would do both.
When one is graced with such a vehicle, it is your duty to the community to uphold its namesake, and maintain the humilty to throw in the towel and pass it along to someone who can if you find that you are unable to maintain these obligations. I essence, that may be your car, but because you showed us, its our car as well. Do us proud

I plan on starting this now unanimous deciion project in the next two weeks, money is tight, but when i sell my 99 Volvo C70 Turbo, that should be plenty. i'll post new pics as i dissasemble the car. NeedforSpeed, I appreciate the offer but i think i need to hold onto this one i traded my 89 IROC-Z 350 TPI and alot of dough for this girl. iv'e got everything int it, my soul even.
When the thieves come 'a knockin, I'll be IROC'n

To DiNunzio: When a car is stolen and recovered, two things can happen, The insurance comany (in MN anyway) can give the car a salvage title and sell it for junk, But my car was in my company parking lot and ran dealer plates, so i didn't carry my own ins. or like in my case, the car was given back with no vin plates. In most states, after the car has been recovered, you can take it to an ispection station where they will make sure the car is road worthy, and issue the car a NEW, Different Vin number, and give you a sticker with the new vin number that you put in the drivers side door jamb. The sticker says This vehicle has been issued a new vin number due to loss/Theft of original. This vehicle has been inspected by MN (or your state) D.M.V and complies with all required.......blah,blah,blah. or something close to this. But i dont want to get a different vin number, so i may just run dealer plates again and carry the police report as well as the carfax and my title and lien card, and........well you get the idea.

Car: too many ...
I'm the minority here but I would gut it, start to mod it, and actually race with it. Why not, thats what it was built to do right? IMO any value has been lost due to the tampering of the VIN. Just my .02 ...

I've taken most of the interior out now. only things left are
Dashboard (dash pad removed)
Seat belts.
Upper rear seat backs. (Got outer nuts off, but cant tilt seats all the way up to get out)
center console.
and the roll cage.
Needforspeed, please pm me soon because i'm stalled rigt now. I dont want to take out the cage if you really want the car, but i had to stop yesterday so I wouldnt take everything out .
