I am still in need of brand new hood insulation for my 84 T/A.

Many members have without problems (though I don't personally like the idea).

Re: hood insulation

Never had insulation on ANY of my 3rd gens, glass or steel hoods, and never had paint problems.

Took the insulation off my current GTA, and my paint isn't suffering. Wear gloves though...They are some FIERCE fiberglass! I didn't, and learned the hard way.

Re: hood insulation

I haven't had insulation on the hood for years. No paint problems, in fact the paint on the underside looks cleaner than the outside! (no chips)

Re: hood insulation

I think the insulation is more to help reduce some engine noise in the car than to protect the hood paint from heat. Check prices on insulation with some of this sites sponsors.

Re: hood insulation

my only concern in not running hood ins. would be if you have decals on your hood (hoodbird or engine callouts) other than that you should be fine

Re: hood insulation

The under hood insulation is there for noise reduction and not to protect the paint from emgine heat. .

Re: hood insulation

hood insulation is to keep your engine from getting cold in the winter

On my wife's 90 RS, before we got a 'glass hood & repainted the whole car, we had vinyl stripes. Same way on my old 92 RS. I had vinyl stripes before I repainted the whole car.

So, I wouldn't worry about the heat. Besides, I have a set of vinyl flames, on the to of my intake plenum. Talk about some heat! And it is fine.

Re: hood insulation

The insulation is for noise reduction as well as keeping the engine hotter for emissions.
