Prep'ing GTA for MAACO

Besides taking off everything I don't want to get overspray on, and getting the body panels as straight as possible, what else should I be doing to get my GTA ready for MAACO?
I'm planning on their base coat / clear coat package, and yes, it is going to be a color change. Not gonna bother with under the hood, I can spray that flat black myself and be happy, but I do want the jams done.
I'm not sure if MAACO will let me give them a pile of parts (the ground effects pieces, wing, side molding, etc.) to be painted seperatly and I'll just put everything back together myself, but I'd like to do this just so it turns out looking as good as possible. I've heard some people say to sand the car down and prime it myself, while others have said to just get the car ready by taking care of any major problem areas, but NOT to prime it myself because of compatability issues between the different brands of primer/paint.
also, my BIGGEST concern with doing the MAACO paint job is that I don't want the paint flaking/peeling/chiping off the front bumper like you see so many times with these cars. I know I'm gonna have runs and orange peel, and it wont last forever, but a year from now I don't want chunks of paint lifting off the front bumper or ground effects pieces. Is this just because of the CHEAP paint jobs, or should I be worried about this with the bc/cc?
Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated, I've been having a hell of a time trying to decide how to get this car in a new coat of paint and I've decided MAACO is my most realistic and practical option.

Re: Prep'ing GTA for MAACO

maaco doesnt sand to the metal. they just get the top-ish coat or coats off and throw a light primer and spray thier paint and clear coat. i went and asked em myself. they have like the $300 paintjob which sounds just ok but dont expect it to last long, and the $1800 paint job which sounds much better. I personally sanded my car down to the metal and primed it with black primer. i suggest doing that so u can save a few bucks and get it done a lil better. it didnt cost me a lot to do it but it took several days. then u can see exactly what shape your body is in (i found a huge dent on the door hidden with primer! the guy i bought it from said it had never been hit!) when i do take it to get it painted (sometime in the future) all they will have to do pretty much is spray and clear coat it. i would also take off the side marker lights and tail lights, stuff like that, cuz they charge like $100 more just to do that! well good luck! hope it turns out nice!

Re: Prep'ing GTA for MAACO

Most of the flaking/peeling problem a are because of GMs paint in the late 80s/early 90s, no because of Maaco or other shops.

When my 90 was painted, by a GOOD shop, they tried 3 times on the roof, to do a scuff-n-shoot, each time going deeper, and it STILL peeled & flaked each time. They finally had to take it down to bare metal, and start from the ground up. No more flaking/peeling.

Basically got 4 paint jobs for the price of 1!

Re: Prep'ing GTA for MAACO

I got the $600 special on the 91 v6 I used to have. Turned out great! It had a run or two, but I was happy with it for the money. I got the integrated clearcoat and kept it nice and waxed and it looked like new paint for over a year...then it got hit. The Maui Blue Formy I have now has some oxidation on the roof and I plan on taking it back to the same Maaco.

Problem is, I don't really think I'd be able to do it in my garage, my parents would KILL me even if I sealed everything off. Also, I'd need to buy another compressor, cause the one I've got the motor only works some times not all the time, as well as a water separator, gun, etc.
Just seems like it might be a huge cluster-you know what, cause I'd be rushing and wouldn't really have a good place to do it, ya know?

Rent a booth If theres and do it yourself shops around your area that would be the best way to go.And I would block the primer. if you get orange peel you could always wet sand and buff
