Third Gen Roof skin question....

Does any one know what would make a 92 Camaro Roof skin different then the previous years? I've found some one that has NOS roof skin for a 92 Camaro. I checked the dealer for part numbers because I have an 89. The dealer said that part number is only for 92. The 91 and previous has a different number which is of course discontinued.

All help would be appreciated as I really need a new skin and $290 didn't seem like a bad deal for NOS part.

Thanks -

Re: Third Gen Roof skin question....

now when you say "skin," do you mean the headliner. if so, all you need to do is get the material and do it yourself. if not, then i have no idea what your talking about.

Re: Third Gen Roof skin question....

No I'm not talking about the headliner. I'm talking about the exterior metal roof panel that goes from the windshield frame back to the hatch glass and from door glass across to other door glass.

Does anyone know if they're being made aftermarket since the dealer shows them discontinued? I would like to have new if possible rather than a junkyard cut out...

Please let me know if someone knows where to find one.

Thanks ---

Re: Third Gen Roof skin question....

Sounds like that's a very hard to find part and it also sounds like a good price. I have no idea what would be different about the '92 skin, but one tiny little insignificant difference could (and usually will) change the part number. But then again, it could be a big difference. I personally think it would be worth the gamble, even if I were the one spending the money.

Re: Third Gen Roof skin question....

The metal was treated differently in 92 for rust prevention. That could be why it has a different part number. Other than that, they should all be the same fit.

Re: Third Gen Roof skin question....

I bet even if they did differ a little bit you could still get it to work, I think you should swap your whole roof not just use a skin. After you weld and heat up the stock metal it will be alot weaker and the stress from going over bumps and twisting the frame can crack your windows or even crack the welds. You need alot of reinforcement also. Check out this thread https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/body...ht=black+widow

Re: Third Gen Roof skin question....

I know that is an option I was just hoping to not have to get into the structure because overall the body is in really good condition besides that rust are on the roof skin and a small area below the driver's door lower hinge. I've had the car since new and want to bring it back to as new condition.

Re: Third Gen Roof skin question....

Can the damaged area be filled with a welder? What about making a patch? It would be alot easier than replacing the entire skin. Take some metal snips to a junkyard, and cut a section of the roof out from a trashed car. Be sure to take measurements and cut a patch from the same area so the curvature is the same after patched.

Re: Third Gen Roof skin question....

Unfortunately it's a little bigger area then a pin hole. Apparently the dealer made a mistake and it isn't available from Lansing. So now I'm back to square one looking for a replacement. I may end up having to get a complete top from junker... I was hoping to avoid cutting the structure...

Re: Third Gen Roof skin question....

You can still drill out the spot welds of a donor roof and use just the skin. While I have never replaced the roof skin on a camaro, I have on countless other vehicles and it is much better to replace just the skin, rather than the whole roof structure.

Re: Third Gen Roof skin question....

the welds on a skin would come apart as soon as you went over a bump and it would be a pita to get it flat before and after welding. all you need to to is cut off the roof at the points that gm welded them together, its the best way and its the easiest way. then all you do is "dry" fit your windows to see if everything lines up good and tack weld it, then after its tacked double check again. Then take some 3/16 sheet metal peices and weld those on for extra support only on the sails and you should have a straight stronger than factory roof that took half the time and looks alot better then a skin ever would.

Re: Third Gen Roof skin question....

I appreciate all the help. I found a NOS GM setup which includes roof skin, substructure, A-pillars and the cowl from pillar to pillar. I think that's the way I'll go and utilize the factory joints. I'm planning on putting on subframe connectors first to eliminate the flex so the corners don't crack again.

Re: Third Gen Roof skin question....

IIRC one of the key features of the 3rd Generation was the fact that the structure that enclosed the Windshield all the way to the top of the B Pillars was One piece, So from the Cowl to the rear hatch was one piece and there was an inner piece obviously to add in stiffness and something to screw your headliner to. At the time this was apparently unique...

In short if you do it RIGHT you will want to pull the windshield and cut the top of the cowl and go all the way back to the lead lines which is actually evident when you start looking at them closely. As the curve around the hatch area on the top is often a little bumpy from the leading from the factory.

I guess honestly there would be several ways to actually do it but that would be how I would think would get you the best results...

Too much work for me personally...

Re: Third Gen Roof skin question....

take off your interior panels and look and the structure of it, theres nothing to it.. there is two small metal parts that stick up from the body that attach to the pillars with like 4 pinch welds, then the quarter panels are attached to the roof near the top of the sail panel. It's pretty simple and if you have the mechanical knowledge of a 14 year old you could easily do it. The hard part is just getting everything aligned, which is not hard at all considering you already have the parts that go in the holes to check that.. get someone to help you and you can swap a whole roof in a day.
