In 1987-1989, you could get TTops with a L98.

I'm not exactly sure what your asking man but it sounds like a rare model for that year. But keep in mind t-tops are like the norm for our cars. My hard top has grown on me now!

Re: My 88 IROC-Z L98 with T-Tops

Yeah, in 88 you couldn't order a 350 with t-tops. That's the info I've gathered on several IROC related websites, including Wikipedia. Only in 1989 could you get them with t-tops. So I don't know what to think except that it's extra special.

honestly, if you were going to sell the car before and now you are thinking otherwise just because you found out it might be rare I don't think you are really ready to sell . unless it is in investment quality condition it wont matter how rare it is to a lot of people because most people buy these cars to work on and drive and there are probably thousands of T-top cars with 350 tpi, lt1, ls1 out there.

No, I was ready to sell. I had someone come look at it too. I had 3 ads on 3 different websites trying to sell. Frankly I don't want to. But costs are too high in my household & my woman & I were trying to figure out where to cut them. I have 2 cars so it's a not always so simple maintaining these 2. I was laid off in June so that's the reason why I was trying to sell. But it's not the t-tops really that get me, it's more so the fact that I waited for more than 10 years to get a car like this. I have it & I've already done lot's of stuff to her but I've also kept the original matching numbers & original interior & exterior.

I have an 88 IROC-Z L98 with T-Tops...pretty sure they aren't as rare as you think they are.

I could be wrong on this.....but I thought you could get an L98 t-top car from 1987-1989? Starting in 1990, the L98 equipped cars produced more torque and horse power...so starting in 1990, the ttop L98 was no longer an option...(90,91,92)

What I heard that made me think about this to begin with was that the 1988 L98's as well as the 90-92 350's didn't have t-tops because of the chassis not being strong enough to handle the torque.

Again, I heard this from a guy who accused me of lying about my car. He also told me that 1989 was the only year GM made a L98 with t-tops. I did research on it online for a few days before posting this thread & all of the websites I found stated that a 1988 L98 didn't come with t-tops except for those that were ordered out of the factory to have them by specific requests from buyers, back in the day.

In 1988 the torque rating on the L98 was 330. That is only 15 less than what it was in 1990. 330 lbs. of torque is alot of torque, lol.

but 345 is more

Honestly, I'm not sure if anyone knows the true answer to this question

Re: My 88 IROC-Z L98 with T-Tops

The car was availale with a 350 and ttops to anybody that wanted them frm 1987- 1989. It wasn't a special order or anything. All these other websites are just plain wrong! The issue of the car having too much torque and the body couldn't handle it is also wrong. In 1990, the weight of the car increased because of a different body sealer, different dash setup and whatever else and because of the airbag. With the increased weight and ttops, the car was now subject to a different set of gov't rules. To avoid the rules, the ttops were dropped from 350 cars. The Firebird Formula was still able to get a 350 and ttops because it had less overall weight than the GTA and Trans Am. The only Camaro eligible for the 350 was the IROC-Z, so ttops weren't available from 1990-92 on 350 based cars.

This website will give you the most accurate information on these cars. Wikipedia is wrong as are most personal enthusiast sites.

Re: My 88 IROC-Z L98 with T-Tops

I have a 1988 IROC with stock Ttops. The key that locks the Ttops, locks the two back compartments and the doors. So ya, some 350's in '88 came with Ttops. I don't believe it's terribley uncommon but it's way cool.

The only post 1989 T-Top L98 cars I've seen came with the dealer installed T-Tops which are a pain in the *** to deal with. A friend of mine had a so equipped 1991 Trans-AM GTA car.

Re: My 88 IROC-Z L98 with T-Tops

It's not worth my time or effort to "fix" Wikipedia if someone else can come in and undo the fix. The other person will site "proof" from another website that is incorrect or a magazine or book that is incorrect. The information has been documented incorrectly so many times, that it has become stated as correct. TGO is the only place to get correct/accurate information on these cars.

Case in point, the 1992 Heritage Edition Camaro. The GM service/body manual shows the hood and rear deck has the "25th Anniversary" badge when in actuality, it was just the rear decklid. Again, TGO is the only place to get the most accurate information on these cars.

So the GM literature is wrong about their own car?

It wouldn't surprise me. That documentation isn't exactly written by the people assembling the cars, or even the people who decide what the cars will look like options wise.

Then how are we to know what inforation is correct and what is not? Info provided by GM or info from some guy on the internet? Not saying anyone is wrong or anything, but am saying GM should of had it's chit together and had better documentation about these cars.
