Opinions on paint scheme '83 Z28HO

After quite a few years in red oxide primer, I've decided to finally get her painted. It's going into a body shop the first week of November (next month).

They'll be keeping it at the shop most of the winter, which is good...since I need the room in my garage for the boat, my S-10, Challenger and the wife's Pontiac Vibe. The Cavalier's braving the outside.....

Anyhow, I'm seriously thinking of kinda copying a couple other Camaro paint schemes I've seen in the past...I think they rock!!

If you've been on the board for awhile, you may have seen Sinister Z's car. It's a canary yellow with black hockey stripes. I'm not a big fan of yellow, and I won't be lowering my car, but I love that scheme. So here's the colors I'm deciding on...

Painting the car Dupount Pepper Metallic gray with black hockey stripes (one down each side) with bright silver ground FX. I also want to retain the blacked out area around the headlights, front lower grill -and put a stripe down each side of the cowl. I even plan to get the original "5.0 Litre HO" decals reinstalled in the factory locations.

Some time after that, I plan to get some nice 15" drag wheels (around 4-6" in front and 8-9" in back) and trying to stuff as wide a tire as I can in the rear without rubbing the quarters. Kinda undecided on wheels too, maybe Outlaws...

I've personally seen the work this guy can do...he's good and well known around here. He can do flames, stripes, ghost flames - anything custom. He garantees his work as long as I own the car.

So whattya think?? I'm open to any other ideas too, but I gotta decide real soon...

EDIT: I've also thought about just painting the whole thing '99 Chrysler Sebring Silver Metallic - but the ground FX would most likely have to be the same color...

I think its a great idea. Once the car gets painted and the decals go on im sure you will be able to choose a wheel. Personally i would go the blacked out route and stay away from chrome, but thats just my

Thanks for the reply, but I guess I like the chromies too much. Personally, I think the blacked out wheels are a fad that's gonna go away soon.

-On another note, I just turned the car into the body shop yesterday, so it's gone for the winter. It's gonna get painted Dark Pepper Mettallic Gray (same as Eleanor) and will have mettallic black hockey stripes down each side and on each side of the cowl on the hood. Ground FX will be Chrysler Sebring Silver. He's doing all door jambs, under the hood etc.
Can't wait!!

The guy does good work. He'll also re-align the hood, fenders, doors and get the T-Top weatherstrip sealed down. He even mentioned doing as much of the engine compartment as he can - at least the shock towers. Hopefully he won't run into any issues. I know firsthand since I sanded it down to bare metal myself that it's bondo-free.

I also have a set of the older aluminum Crager rear window louvers I'll prep and paint myself while the rest of the car is in the shop.

-I'll post pics when the big day arrives!!

Re: Opinions on paint scheme '83 Z28HO

Well, I just got the word from the body shop that the Camaro's paint will be done in 2 weeks!!

They said the stripes were painted too, and he wanted to know what size engine I have because he's putting it on each side of the cowl hood. They are also realigning the hood, doors etc. and putting all the weatherstripping back on it!

Can't wait to see it!!

I plan to get the wheels/tires after I get it back home. Still need to get an ABS headliner, better dash pad to spruce up the interior...

Re: Opinions on paint scheme '83 Z28HO

Well, everything has gone downhill.....I got a call from the body shop, and they said while they were trying to start the car, the engine started making noise and they shut it down. Since it ran great when I brought it there - I figured - how bad could it be. Just has to be something simple.

Well, I just looked at it. The paint job looks awesome, the stripes were just right. It has "Supercharged" hand painted on each side of the cowl, and "408" on the front of each hockey stripe down the side. It was in the garage on a cloudy day but the metal flake should look great in the sun.....well - so much for that...it was time to hear what the engine sounded like. It started and it sounds like it's coming apart. Loud knocking from the top of the engine. Took a heat gun to each header pipe as they exit the cylinder.....#1 was cold. Pulled that plug and it was wet and fouled. Took a compression tesater to it and it didn't even flinch the needle. Uh Ohhhh...not good. Checked for bent push rods - both were straight.

So we then backed off on the rocker arm polylocks and put some compressed air into the cylinder..I could hear the piston slam down towards the bottom of the cylinder - but the engine didn't move!!

So all indications are that it dropped a rod cap somehow. Now I have to pull the entire engine to see what the damage is. I don't know whether they revved the hell out of it trying to start it, or what happened.

I really don't think they did anything intentional, but this really sucks. I'm going to have it flat-bedded to my house this weekend.....

Not a ripple if you look down the side of the body. Hood, fenders and doors were realigned and they did an excellent job on that. As you can tell, my wheels/tires look horrible after all the bodywork/paint. New wheels are on the list anyways.

Good looking car, those factory rims could look really good on that car if you polished the exposed aluminum and repatined the painted areas to match the color of your car. It could be a good thing to do while you look for other rims.

Over all very nice ride, feels good when hard work pays off huh?
