Re: List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

Local junkyard has a 91-92 Firebird and the front nose seems in good condition. I got the headliner off it and I am about to go back for the t-top bag. It has good tail lights if I recall as well. Also how disreable or valueable are Grid tail lights? I can get 3 for around $15 each at a JY a friend works at.

Here are the pics of the bird, for anyone interested and lives in Chicago its located here.

Re: List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

Question, are Firebird dashes compatible on Camaros? What are the differences? The dash if I recall had a crack on the passenger side but I am not 99% sure due to seeing many in the past few days and me not really paying attention to it besides taking some pictures to refer to if someone I know needs a part.

I will need to check the front bumper again and see for any bad spots, I see it goes for a pretty penny. I can probably get a decent deal on it but will probably be around $45 or $75 for it. Small things I can get for almost nothing, big things is when the manager steps in and gives me a straight up normal customer price.

i think they might go together, in my opinion the firebird interior always looked way way way better then the camaros so if anything id put the dashpad from an fbird into camaro or in this case the entire dashboard and gauge cluster

actually, the stock aluminum 15" rims are what i'm looking for. some nice ones, that can be buffed up and look good. the ones on my car I bought not too long are partially spray painted black and all marred up from driving down dirt roads...PO drove them, not me.

Re: List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

I have a 5 spd console plate from a camaro, it has the ashtray cover still but no ashtray and it dose have some marks from mis-placed cigarettes.

Thaking offers starting at $5+ shipping afik it wont fit the Fbird console, atleast not the later style like mine (90)

I just picked up a nice roll up cargo area cover that was faded from plack to purple, I re-dyed it black and it looke pretty nice. I am planning on putting it in my car since I couldnt find the rigid rear well cover an grey or black (any interest in that piece?) but I'll entertain offers of $20 or better. It comes with the end caps to mount it if your car didnt have one originaly.

I would like a pic of the dana rear too, if I spotted one I would likely keep it my self but always willing to accept an offer.

Would anyone want to undertake the hassle of buying a T5 swap? Came across one a while ago but assumed it would be too much work.

I might be doing a T56 anyway soon so I didnt even grab it my self.

Re: List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

Well I myself am currently looking for a set of tail light black outs for a TA, along with aftermarket rims, or atleast a set of Black GTA wheels. I know there are a few parts discontinued like the 3 wire directional/ brake light sockets... Center consoles are good to grab, mine is cracked, but hoping to upgrade to 4th gen soon. Any unique hood is also valuable especially the formula hood because of knight rider fans. I am looking for a wrecked 4h gen with a LS1 and a 6 speed however, but Im sure a bunch of us are... lol

The pads are interchangeable, but not the same. Camaros have the speaker grille that is made into the pad. Firebirds use a plastic snap in grille.

Well, I know they can be made to work as I parted out a 1982 Firebird someone swapped the seats, console and dash pad out of a slightly later Camaro into. I still have the pad and it is not modified.

Re: List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

Okay, I don't want to come off as confrontational, but I just happened to have 2 near perfect dash pads at hand, a 1984 or 5 Camaro (I can verify which) and a 1984 Firebird. They are the same size and every hole is in dead nuts the same location. The only differences are the grilles style and the shape of the front edge. The Firebird has a stitched design and is straight across. The Camaro is smooth and has a sort of recessed scallop in the very center.

Pics are of a the Camaro pad on top of the Firebird

If you can find an OEM F41 badge, those are rare. I know in 84 less than 2k F41's were produced, and not all even got the badge. Mine has it, just sayin.

Re: List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

I had it wrong earlier, Firebird pads won't work in Camaros because of the center dash AC vents on the Camaro. I am not sure of Camaro pads work on Firebirds because I don't own a Firebird. It has been about 8 years since I tried putting a Firebird dash in my Camaro, so I forgot why exactly the pad wouldn't fit.

Re: List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

If you find a console with the analog clock, TAKE IT. I don't know exactly how rare they are but my '85 Camaro was the only thirdgen I've seen with one, and people constantly commented on it. I saw a NOS analog clock on eBay a couple years back, I bid at $30 because mine was scuffed up pretty bad and the seconds hand would get stuck if it heated up, it ended up selling for something like $260 and although I've watched, I've never seen another one come up.

I think you can get analog clocks rebuilt. Not sure but I would look into it before I gave over $200 for one.

NICE!! You win the prize!! I found these today. One thing you did get wrong though. These came of a 1982 Berlinetta. I guess that means that they can't be 83-84. Are these considered Rare? This Camaro is UNTOUCHED!! It's also the same year as mine. I got those caps for $6 (Pair).

His prices are inconsistent though. The car had a nice instrument cluster and i was thinking of taking the Bezel off and cutting it to fit Autometer Gauges, but he wouldn't sell the Bezel alone. He wanted $85 for the whole gauge assembly. It was nice, but not that nice.

Re: List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

Those are from 1982 and they also came on Firebirds that year. Most people call them "window crank deletes".They have a black with silver and red Phoenix in the center. As far as i have seen, on 3rd gens they only appear on 1982's. In 1983 they made power window versions of the door panels that have no holes at all. They are a sort of transitional feature as they are used in the 2nd generation. Now, my 82 Firebird are made a little different than the 2nd gens I have seen. The center has a rubber emblem in the center, much like some of the emblems we see on cars today (and on those old leather keychain fobs). The older ones had a hard clear lens with the emblem screened in the rear. But they are the same size and have the same 3 retaining clips.

Well, mine are hard plastic. Not at all rubbery. I've looked for these online and all i can find are generic rubber ones that come with a kit.

Maybe there is a mid-year change? Mine are the stock ones. They have part #'s and all. The rubber is all oxidized and milky. If you try to peel the rubber off, it is just a silver plate with the bird embossed. The black and red screening are on the rubber. Every stock 82 Trans Am I have seen has had these. Though I do remember seeing alternate colors on lower line Firebirds.

Knight Rider guys are looking for the red and black ones as they can be seen in the cars during the first season.

I'm not looking for a replacement, I can easily repair mine, just was mentioning to OP that they are in fact rare and worth pulling. But thanks anyway.

The firebird one is about 2 inches shorter than the camaro one. if you try to put it in a camaro there will be a gap between the dash and the windshield. been there done that.

Also don't forget about the aluminum front impact bars that came on some early third gens I've never seen one later than 84, but i've seen them on firebirds and camaro's. the trim level seems to have nothing to do with it either as far as i know. does anyone know if there is a RPO for the aluminum bumper or is it just a different material they used for a while?

Bad news :(

Well the finantial crunch has finaly caught up with me and I'm afraid the T/A is going this week.

I dropped the asking price to well below a grand and still had no takers, I really wanted it to go on and be finished by someone eventualy but no one was willing to take it on.

So next week I'm having it taken away by a local upullit yard after I pull off some valuable parts.

I'll be pulling the complete TPI with uncut harness (reffering to the injector- ignition- ecu and other basic efi connections) the mint dash and dash pad the outlaw II 16" wheels also in mint condition (missing 2 center caps) along with all the goodies I have acumulated over the years.

Parts include.... 4th gen power lumbar front seats, 4th gen manual seats. Both in charcoal grey.

Full set of original light grey seats with near perfect cloth, just with the typicaly compressed D side bolster.

LS1 brake calipers with brackets.

3rd gen roll up cargo cover in black with mounting hardware.

The semi rare alloy spares in both styles. The original WS6 black alloy that looks like a standard steel wheel and the early Camaro 10 spoke alloy. Both in original condition, never used.

Spare set of runners and a TPI base that needs a broken bolt extracted from the T-stat area.

TPIS 52mm throttlebody.

TPIS adjustable FPR.

TPIS EGR blockoff.

Ford racing 24# injectors.

Headliner, original stregnthened with resin and recovered in charcoal foam backed fabric.

Plenty of light grey interior plastics.

Aluminum prop shaft.

Posi rear diff.

If anyone needs something specific ask right away so I can pull it before the car goes, dont wait til you have the cash if you dont already. That can be worked out later. I would like as much of this car to be reused by the community as possible.

What year is it? I need a console lid and hinge for a 1989 Formula 350 WS6.
Man that really sucks having to part out your ride. I feel for you. There are a lot more people out there going through the same thing.

Re: List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

1990 350 TPI T/A WS6. It has every option available that year short of the deluxe door panels and leather.

Most if not all of the aero is good with just scratches, one piece was broken but I found a replacement in the same color.

The car is burgundy too, I read that it's a somewhat rare color but most panels would need repainted anyway.

I also have a flowmaster single tip exhaust, I believe 3.5".

I removed the tail lights, they are in good condition but could use a buffing. No cracks or breaks anywhere though.

I have everything but the dash under structure out and the manifold and harness for the motor.

I just remembered I have a brand new radiator still in the car, like everything else I bought it has less than 1,000 miles on it.

If anyone thinks they want a part let me know right away so I can pull it.

Re: List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

Yeah it is sad. I had high hopes for this car but the body kept getting rougher as I dug in deeper and money was split between 2 project cars when it should have gone to one or the other.

But me and the wife are planning to buy a new/ off lease car at the begining of next year so I may have a chance at redemption lol.

She is pushing me to get a truck so we dont have to borrow one every time we buy some new furniture but I really want something sporty. I get that we need space and practicality but there are nice wagons and x overs that retain some sporting character.

Also i'm torn between loving domestic performance and my obsession with Mazdas. If I were to buy a brand new car tommorow it would be an RX8 R3 hands down, sure a V6 camaro or mustang will own it in the straights and others still may be faster in the bends but nothing on the road that I could dream of affording offers that kind of raw driving bliss! Well mebe a Miata but um no.

A CX7 x over would be a good compromise, the early ones only came with a turbo and the newer up scale ones come with an even larger motor with a larger turbo and more power. Not exactly a rocket ship in a big wagon body but proabably quite fun to drive. I got to drive an auto Mazda3 and liked it so maybe the lack of a manual isnt so bad.

A Mazda6 wagon would be cool but they are all a few years old now.

If the ute version of the G8/comodore came state side I could see my self in a truck but there is really nothing on the market I want to drive for the next half a decade with a bed.

I proposed putting a hitch on my MX6 or the new vehicle whatever it ends up being and buying a trailer but she didnt seem thrilled with that

Sory about the loooong off topic rant, just looking for the silver lining.

Re: List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

My sister has a RX8, what a heap. Power is beyond pathetic (2.8 3rd gen can smoke it) and handling is about on par with a 3rd with a decent suspension. On top of that, they are a nightmare to upkeep. Try moving it across the driveway, youll regret it. Next, the rear water channels are down the trunk edges right into the vent hole for the tail lights, so you've got a fishtank on both corners and a mess of blown fuses. Try changing the plugs without inventing new swear words. The whole drivers side suspension has to come out to get to the little access hole

Thats just three of my gripes out of a whole list. About the only things I do like are the seats (very comfy) and the massive brakes

A 2.8 3rd gen will not smoke it, if you are launching it below 5 grand then you are going to lose to most cars. Driven properly they are mid 14 second cars. That puts it ahead of nearly all production 3rd gens excluding the TTA.

I dont know what to say if you had to remove the entire suspension to change the plugs. I can do it from the top side no problem. Also a V8 3rd gen isnt exactly a dream to replace plugs on either.

As far as the cold flooding issue, whats to regret? So you have to take 30 seconds to do the flood clear procedure that every EFI car ever made has had since the begining.

Please tell me you were not so foolish as to pay to have the car towed to the dealer for a $200+ "flood clear" procedure Depress the gas... crank for 5-30 seconds ... release the gas and start the car.

And as much as I love 3rd gens they just do not compare to a car with less mass better weight distribution and less polar momentum. Not to mention a fantastic suspension and an attention to feel and feedback GM has never come close to.

Any stock V8 3rd gen will throw you to the wolves if you get to agressive, the rx8 has massive levels of grip and will go straight to it's limits without once threatening to come un stuck.

The one thing I never liked about the T/A was it's diesel like power range, the MX6 may only have 161 whp but it has a massive power band that stretches across thousands of RPM and it will happily bounce off the 7800 limiter without flinching. I can enjoy the thing at sane speeds where ever I go while the T/A was forced to grumble along at practicaly idle since getting into the TPI on anything other than a prepped strip resulted in massive wheel spin headed off by a far to low redline.

The RX8 like all other RX cars actualy has a similar broad powerband for those willing to use it and can do incredible things in the right hands.

If I ever do get my R3 I'll give you a ride so you can see what I mean Ofcourse if I do end up trolling around in some pickup I will be looking for a nice 1st /2nd gen 7 as a project car, I have been wanting to put together a semi PP 12A for a while now.

Well she's gone as of about 2:15 today But the good news is the guy who bought the shell just wrecked his circle track car last night so there is a good chance he'll be using the bird as a replacement.

Not exactly what I planned but ending life as a race car is a pretty good way for a transam to go.

Weirdly enough my wife is even more affected by thi car going than I am, she seems genuinely depressed and even mentioned buying another one when we can afford a 3rd car.

I havent sold anything off the car yet, I have the whole TPI harness only cut at the grounds and fuel pump leads. I also clipped the hvac subharness rather than fish it out of the firewall. So wiring up a new fuel pump should make for a quick start. I also have a tpis prom to go with the harness/manifold that delets the vats and egr. The other specs are un known however.

I got the whole dash out since it was proabably the only perfect 3rd gen dash I have ever seen in person.

I didnt get the wheels off though, it sucks because the newer front tire was a perfect match to replace the one bad tire that I have on the mazda.
