List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

I see lats of 3rd gens pass through the several local yards every year and many of them go to the crusher with tons of parts that look usable.

I can get a lot of things rather cheap but I dont want to fill my house up with a bunch of crap that nobody even wants to pay shipping on.

So what items are people interested in enough to justify the effort and expense of bringing home?

I know the delux door panels from Firebirds are desirable and I'll grab a set if I see some in very good condition, plastic replacement drip rails from late T-top cars are another hot item.

But there are things that are needed because the rot, rust, crack or decay from the environment and the midwest is among the harshest places for a car in the country so if it rusts where you are at you can assume it's much worse here. If it cracks or fades from the sun it'll be as bad or worse here.

So what would you be willing to pay a fair price for that I have a decent chance of finding?

I seem to sell alot of center consoles / shift plates. Switches are also good to grab. 140 Speedos, factory cd players, dash pads, factory amp speaker holders, etc...

91-92 GTA tailights an wings, of course switches, int. trims(firebird door tabs etc.), and all the interior screws, i always strip cars of them when i find one, repos on websites go for $1 a piece so that adds up when trying to redo interiors or replace parts... and center consoles and radio trim panels, dash bezels and pads...best bet, bring a camera, take pics and post up, ppl will jump on this stuff

Definitely AC delete dash's and HVAC controls. Factory CD players, shift plates, instrument clusters, firebird headlight motor modules, hatch pull down motors, GTA wheels, any rust free body parts, taillights, anything from a black interior, leather wrapped steering wheels, TPI assemblies, vortec heads, and well that's all I can think of at the moment.

Re: List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

1) 1982 sill plates. If you swap in 4th gen seat belts then you will want these sill plates or have to make some that resemble these.
2) Back windows with no rear defrost/defog lines.
3) z-28e(export) taillights(have amber turn signals on the outermost sides of the tails)
4) Stock Camaro fiberglass hoods (i think 82-84?)
5) Stock firebird aluminum hoods (87+ Formula style/82-84 t/a style)
6) IROC wonder bar
7) 36mm front swaybar, 24mm rear swaybar, 19mm rear swaybar
8) 91-92 Formula nose or any front/rear bumper in excellent condition
9) Dana 44??? Rear axle

Never seen a factory CD player, center consoles/dash pads dont seem to survive here well. It's the reason I got a 4th gen console.

Seeing a post about the 91-92 TA/GTA lights is what made me decide to post this thread. I have seen atleast one and didnt know it was worth anything, it was on a V6 car though.

Are these rare? I actualy stripped one down to get the F glass wing and deck to replace my T/A's dammaged rubber spoiler. I left the glass behind because I wanted to keep the defrost

4) Stock Camaro fiberglass hoods (i think 82-84?)
Seen these, always broken and I assumed they were aftermarket, I suppose the good ones wouldnt be obvious if you didnt know what to look for.

5) Stock firebird aluminum hoods (87+ Formula style/82-84 t/a style)
Never knew of such a thing, I'll look out for them for my own car

8) 91-92 Formula nose or any front/rear bumper in excellent condition
Is there any difference between the 91-92 cars with the aero package? I have seen many 91-92 V6's with the aero kit and they look the same regardless of the drivetrain.

9) Dana 44??? Rear axle
From another vehicle?

Thanks for all the ideas, a lot of this stuff is proabably too big to ship and still sell at a decent price but I'll keep my eye's open.

I'll definitely jump on any aftermarket parts I find, I got a TPIS 52mm TB and AFPR along with an entire TPI manifold for just $60! I also snagged the PROM while I was there.

Are 3rd/4th gen aluminum driveshafts worth the effort? I hear that the steel ones tend to vibrate a lot but I have only really driven my T/A with a stock alloy shaft.

any yellow face switches (power windows, mirrors, door locks) that are still in good shape.
Most of the ones I find, aren't worth keeping.

Re: List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

here are some things that I didn't see mentioned so far (though I mostly just skimmed!)

rust free t-top bars are always worth money. Anything that's in exceptional condition is worth grabbing too. GTA door panels. Clean dash pads. Any versions of the "deluxe" seats that are still in great shape.

Re: List of rare/valuable parts of interest to the 3rd gen community?

Any sort of tan interior parts, especially cup holders (i need a drivers side one for my 91 t/a which are a bitch to find, please let me know if you have one).
the little ground effects parts from the 91-92 cars, especially the sections reaching from the front bumper to the front wheel wells.
and I heard that the automatic shifter ***** from 1982 firebirds are pretty desirable as well.

I second the rust free t-top bars. Easily worth 80+ on ebay

You mean the door mounted ones with the map pocket? I have a set in grey that I wont be re-using. I have a 4th gen console thats going in and I figured 6 cup holders in a 4 seater not likely to seat more than 2 is a bit much.

Besides Im going for a cleaner 60's type of treatment for the new panels in black.

How about the Recaro seats and the camarocamarocamaro style seats? I saw a set of each in pretty decent shape and didnt buy them at the time.

A set of 1LE brakes should sell nicely.

The 82 firebird ***** are the round ones right?

How about rocker sill plates? Mine are shattered and most of the ones in the yard are broken also, is this common?

Yeah that's what I mean but I need tan ones. I don't wanna mess up the original color scheme in my Bird.

2) Back windows with no rear defrost/defog lines.
Area specific. Ive got two propped up behind the house i cant sell, even if i could the $50 for them wouldnt be worth storing the huge pieces for an extended time

5) Stock firebird aluminum hoods (87+ Formula style/82-84 t/a style)
EXTREMELY low production, 82-84 and Fierhawks only. Bring a magnet and look for an "A" stamped near the release tab

7) 36mm front swaybar, 24mm rear swaybar, 19mm rear swaybar
Not worth storing. You may get $40 for the fronts, hardly worth it if you ask me

8) 91-92 Formula nose or any front/rear bumper in excellent condition
Agreed, most 91-92 specific parts for both birds and camaros are hard to find and easy to sell. For birds this includes the foglights, turn signals, ground effects and spoiler. Camaros are limited to ground effects

9) Dana 44??? Rear axle
Not found in a 3rd gen and wont fit without cutting it down in a jig. Those willing to do that will find their own rather than buy it from someone

Yes, they are easy to flip. Benefits are nil from a performance perspective though. LS1's are the best because they have a factory damper on the yoke making the smoothest ride

Barring the hard to find parts from low production cars like Players or 1LEs, grab and manual shift plate, pedals, cupholders, V8 ECMs, V8 MAFs, Knight rider junk (hubcaps, turbo fins, 82-84 tails, seats etc)

Excluding the super rare stuff like glass or aluminum hoods, I wouldnt bother pulling good body panels. They are simply too big and too common in good shape to be worth your time

The 91-92 fog lights and housings are crazy hard to find. Also any year hood blisters/louvers are big in demand.

I can imagine that being the case for a specialty car that has been out sourced like the SLP cars etc but all 3rd gens came from GM with either the 10 bolt or 9 bolt.

It wasn't a factory option, but they were available. I forget if they were dealer options or if they were from an aftermarket company...

MyFly82Camaro, www.rockauto.com has the exhaust manifold your looking for, only $67 too. You are REALLY lucky to have found an old iron duke camaro, hardly any of them exist anymore. Please never drop a V8 in! I'm sure as they continue to disappear 4cyl camaros value will go up!

thanks for the kind words of encouragement. It's hard sometimes because all I've heard from people when I talk about my car is that I should pull the 4cyl and drop in a 6 or 8 cyl, and it's like no one appreciates an "original" classic, everything has to be mod to the hilt. Also, ty for the intel on the exaust mani, I'm sure that I'll find more that I'll need as the project moves along.

single stripe irocs or center caps, any sd tpi parts, specially computer with prom. i would say the overhead console for camaros, i've not seen alot of camaros with that option, my 88 has it and i'd figure it might be desireable as the years go on.

Do you happen to have the PN? That would definitely be a great find and there may be some lurking in dealer warehouses still

And thanks for keeping the thread alive everyone! As it happened when I went to the yards right after starting this thread I discovered a severe shortage of 3rd gen's A few weeks before there were 6 at the smallest yard and now there is just a badly rotted and stripped V6 camaro.

The other yards are just as bad. For now anyway, though i have seen an unusual number of 3rd gens on the roads lately. I suppose if they are on the roads rather than the yards then thats a good thing.

There are a bunch of early 4th gens (all V6's) though, I already grabbed what I wanted from them but if theres anything of interest on a 4th gen feel free to toss it in with the 3rd gen bits.

Consoles are either gone or broken, most dashes are there and in good condition but most are missing several smaller parts. A few nice seats still but those are expensive to ship.

No good Bird door panels but I believe some maro's still have good pieces.

Can you find any lower front spoiler lips/chin spoiler/lower valance for the early 1982-84(?) Camaro front nosepiece? They are getting extremely rare to find in decent, usable condition- or in the aftermarket either.

Well I scored my very first bit of booty! A camaro 5 speed shift plate with ashtray door.

The boot is cracked and the diagram is missing but the thing is in pretty good shape. The metal tray part of the ashtray is gone but nothing is broken.

Any interest?

I'm looking for a 4th gen rear spoiler! Maybe you might come across one?

There a fiberglass rap around wing! I'm looking for one to put on my 91 firebird. But it has to be the tall 4th gen spoiler! I believe it needs to come of a 93 to 97 to work. other wise I've been told it will need to be slightly modded to work.

Anyhting that has to do with a rear hatch wiper. They were pretty rare, I think a dealer installed option?
Few people have them but parts are hard to come by.

91-92 Firebird parts. The part that I've found to be especially hard to find is the fender gfx. You can pay upwards of $200 for a broken one. How stupid is that?

Clear glass without tint. I believe tinted windows were an option on cars without AC, non AC cars are hard to find so finding one without window tint is even harder.

T-Tops headliners ! Even though you can get them new, I'm sure a very nice original one could fetch a pretty good money.

Higher end radios cassette and CD players.

Any kind of 82-84 specific parts : switches, 1982 steering wheel, 83-84 leather wrapped steering wheel, shifter and 5 speed plates, center consoles, dash pads, gauge cluster, PMD seats, complete air induction setup, 15" Turbo cast wheels with hubcaps, tail lights, ground effects, bumper covers, aluminium front bumper bar, aluminium Turbo hood (ultra mega rare), headlights motors, etc...

So what would you be willing to pay a fair price for that I have a decent chance of finding?
if you are not ripping anyone off(not to be rude or nothing) but how bout a set of trans am gta tail lights man i really need a set

+1
there's a lot of stuff that is specific to 82-84 f-bodies. unfortunately a lot of parts for these first couple years are not being made in reproduction yet.
the doeskin tan interiors (knight rider style) bring good money since it was only a two year option.

The Dana44 was stock on the Firehawks. It was also offered over the counter at any GM dealer through GM Performance Parts. It was also the dealer service replacement for broken 9 bolt rear ends. SLP bought out the remaining stock from GM after the end of the thirdgen run.

Dana 44 Axle assemblies (GM part numbers):

* 3.31 ratio: GM# 14044853
* 3.92 ratio: GM# 14044854
* 4.09 ratio: GM# 14044855
