Need advice on dash speakers that fit

Hey and thanks for the help! I have a 1982 Z28 I am currently restoring. I am having some trouble finding the right speakers and I would like some recommendations . I am aware that they are 4x6 speakers on the dash but not all of them fit due to the magnet sizes and the odometer and vents that are there. I would like to not alter anything unless I have to. Looking for some nice dash speakers that fit right in without compromising sound quality. My budgets all over the place , If i can find something that is a quality and affordable that would be my choice. But if I have to spend some money I will.

Re: Need advice on dash speakers that fit

4x6 is a pretty tough size, not a lot of good sounding speakers. I tried some cheapo Pyle speakers from Amazon first, didn't sound much better than stock. Tried a NOS set of Alpine Type S 4x6s (had to get NOS since Alpine no longer makes 4x6s), sounded a bit better, but still not great. Now, I've run a set of Infinity 4x6s for the last couple years, but NOT the Kappas; they're the Infinity Reference REF467F. Tight fit with the capacitor on the side, but I did not have to cut or bend anything in my dash. They sound pretty dang good for a 4x6, though I am also running them with a 50W RMS x 4 channel Alpine amp. I have the front speakers set to get around 35W at max volume (speakers are 45W RMS, wanted some headroom), and they sound shockingly clear. Don't expect any bass from them obviously, but the highs/ mids are great. They go for $110 for the pair on Crutchfield at the moment, which is actually the same that I paid for my set back in '22 or '23. Nice to see that they haven't gone up in price.

The speaker pockets in the dash should be the same in an '82 as they are in my '92, but I cannot confirm this.

Edit: Dave is right as well, Camaro dashes are different. I also have a Firebird, so I couldn't tell you how they'd fit in a camaro. All the dimensions are listed on Crutchfield, so you can take some measurements from your dash and cross-check

Being that I have a Firebird, and the dashes are different, the Infiniti speakers I used may not work for you. And I did have to make some modifications to get the to work (in the driver's side). But for reference....

Re: Need advice on dash speakers that fit

The Kappas are better from my understanding, since they use two separately mounted speakers vs the regular oval woofer with a central tweeter. That, however, is also why they require a bit of cutting in the dash to fit (which you can see in the thread that Dave linked). They're also about double the price of the Infinity Reference speakers. Couldn't tell you how they compare since I've never heard Kappas in person

I used Kenwood KFC-4675C in mine. No cutting and they fit fine. They sound ok but not great. I'm running them off of Sony XAV-AX1000 head unit.

I used the Infinity Reference 6432CFX and they fit perfect, with no modifications.
