Re: What you guys think for $1000? 1989 Formula WS6

Its a 305 tbi car.look at the vin. It'll tell you if its got the ws6 package or just look under it and see if it has rear discs. These cars handle great.I just bought one to build a race car out of.It's definitely worth a grand. For $15 bucks you can run a carfax on it.I bought mine to run in a 5 liter SCCA vintage class so I gotta leave the motor in it,but I dropped low comp forged pistons it so I can run a supercharger in it.Got 16x9,s in the front and 16/11,s in the rear.I was gonna ask anybody in one of these body forums if they had ever used one of these kits.I gotta get some cold air to this thing, and make some brake coolers.I'm just interested in the front grille part.Thanks,panhead201

Re: What you guys think for $1000? 1989 Formula WS6

I sold my formula last year, it was an 87 WS7 car. My understanding is that WS7 and WS6 were the same suspension with the exception on disc brakes. My car didn't have discs but WAS a genuine formula. It was also a carb car, maybe that has something to do with the WS7/WS6 discrepancy? If I can find my old screen name posts I'll put up a pic.

Re: What you guys think for $1000? 1989 Formula WS6

There wasnt a WS7 in 87

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...97697-ws7.html

Any formula automatically got the WS6 package. If it wasnt a WS6, then it wasnt a formula, only a mislabeled base with the optional 305 V8

Re: What you guys think for $1000? 1989 Formula WS6

However, you could get a WS6 car in 1987 with rear drum brakes. WS6 for 1987 did NOT necessarily include rear disc brakes for the Formula. You also had to specify a positraction rear end. Then the car got rear disc brakes. Otherwise, it got rear drums and a peg leg rear end. Could have had something to do with the fact that Formulas were available with every engine from the LG4 to the L98 in 1987.

Well, that explains why I thought the rear was broken/worn out. I simply replaced the rear with a good posi unit with the same gears. Thanks for the info.

Yep, I had a 2.73 Posi in my '87 305 TPI Trans Am without WS6, and a peg leg 2.73 in my '87 305 LG4 Formula with WS6. Both were ten bolts and both had drum rear brakes.

Re: What you guys think for $1000? 1989 Formula WS6

I think you would find it hard to find any Formula advertised today with a 305 TBI, vendor instincts always prompt the 350 to appear in any sales description. It reminds me of a 1978 Bandit T/A I saw years ago. It had a wooden dash! However, I bet someone bought the story it was a real T/A, but a 350 doesn't play the same tune as a 400 or 403, lol.

Re: What you guys think for $1000? 1989 Formula WS6

Sir, your post makes no sense. I'm currently in the market for a bird and I've seen plenty of 305 TBI Formulas up for sale.

You also couldn't get a '78 T/A with a 350 (Pontiac, Oldsmobile, or Chevy). Or any other 1st or 2nd Generation T/A for that matter.

Hows your ride doing, man. You oughta post pics as you get it done.panhead201
The old bird is up on some hard times. The front end was smashed up by a careless driver up in Canada, and I'm currently in the process of trying to find a good 85-92 bird (any model) to start swapping all my goodies into. Insurance company totalled the vehicle, and we're currently in a battle about how much the total loss value should be worth. They said $3500, minus $1000 to keep the car. I'm saying $7000, minus about the same to keep the car. Somehow the fact that I had done nearly $20,000 of restoration and had a near perfect final product doesn't equate well for them.

Anyways, back on topic I guess. If anyone happens to find another $1000-$4000 car that's in solid (preferrably unmolested) condition in Texas or the surrounding states, I'd like to know about it. I'd even be very interested in a roller if the body is in good shape.

i think I'm not getting these e-mails in the order in which they are sent. The last thing I read described how you rattle canned the gray stripes on a black primered car. But, thats irrelevant.I dont know how far you care to travel but there is a car in the St Louis Craigs list that says, 1988 PRO/AM factory 305, rare 305 etc, etc. You can either look it up or call the number if you choose to do anything about it. 618-667-4202 leave message. It is listed now.panhead201

In 1968 pontiac discontinued the use of the 326 and GM made the 350,,,,,,5.7 available on all its f=bodied cars.camaro, firebird, and firebird trans am,afirebird model.I may be incorrect about this, after all,I don't remember stating this at all,but it's possible.panhead201

Re: What you guys think for $1000? 1989 Formula WS6

No 350 was available for the 69 Trans Am. It came with a 400 Pontiac, and that's the only option you could get. There was a 350 Formula, but the T/A got the 400.

Not certain which rattle can job you're referring to. I've never done one of those. I'll check out that car in St. Louis, thanks.

Re: What you guys think for $1000? 1989 Formula WS6

No one is going to dispute with you that a 350 cu. in. engine was available in the FIREBIRD starting in 1968. However, the 1969 TRANS AM, the first and only year a 1st gen Trans Am was made, was ONLY available with a 400 cu. in. V8.

Also, please note that these were PONTIAC engines, not GM Corporate engines like the late 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen got. Chevrolet engines did not start appearing in Firebirds until the mid-to-late 70's, and the Pontiac V8 line stopped when the Pontiac 301 was no longer available in 1982.

Re: What you guys think for $1000? 1989 Formula WS6

you are absolutely correct there was no such thing as a 1968 trans am,I f I said there was I was incorrect, but I do think the 69 was avilable with a 5.7,had heads and cam changed for the T/A,the 69 car that was raced had a 302,never available to the public,How they got this by the SCCA is beyond me.It probably had something to the deal they worked out with SCCA where they had to pay royalties to use the name Trans Am since SCCA claimed intellectual property rights to the name. The trans am was an offshoot of a concept car called the Banshee.I'm glad they lost that.panhead201
