Need some advice.

Ok well I am picking up a 82 and most likely will be putting it on a trailer. Does anyone have any tips getting it on the trailer with out damage to the Camaro. Its a ramp up trailer. It hasent been ran in a year or so. So I dont know if I will feel comfortable driving it 45 minutes back. Any tips are appreciated.

Depending on how steep the ramp is you may need to take some 2x6s or 2x8s and blocks to support them. I need them just to get on the dyno at the smog station.

Re: Need some advice.

Just about 3 months ago I bought mine and trailered it home. It had tires that were low which gave it less that 4 inches ground clearance. My trailer sits about 15 inches high and used 3 1/2 foot ramps down to a railroad tie, app 8 1/2 inches high, and 2 x 12 8 ft boards down to the ground. I put a couple of 2 x 4 s under the center of the 2 x 12's and had no problem. I have used this setup several times and each time the car has came up with ease. No clearance issues and realatively easy with the 12 inch width. With my V6 the 2 x 4 supports were not necessary but with the 68 T-Bird w/ 429 even with the supports it was all the 2 x 12 wanted. I have used 2 x 8 also without a problem but the 12 is easier to stay centered on.
I used an electric winch hooked to the crossmember or K Frame (I guess that is what it is called). With tension on it it couldn't move but get slack and it would almost want to fall off.
The father of the girl I bought it from wanted to just say to just pull it up there. It won't hurt anything if it drags but I felt it would not help anything under there (Tear the whole bottom of the car out from under it) so I had to do it my way, the way I described.
Good luck.

Re: Need some advice.

Driving the tow vehicle rear wheels up on blocks or jacking up the trailer tongue.... but leave it hooked up to the truck... will help straighten out the ramps. But honestly ... you're the one doing it, you make up the rules as you go along! We don't know what kind of trailer you have or whats towing it. Good luck.

This is a very good idea. I am not the OP but I agree whole heartedly. My problem is my trailer is so long it will not do much. A regular 16-18 footer it would be a big help in lowering the back of the trailer and also lessening the ramp to trailer angle which is very important.

Re: Need some advice.

I believe its a 18+2 or a 16+2 I cant remember buts its a heavy duty tandem axle and it sits off the ground a bit. The tow vehicle will be a 99 denali or a 09 GMC 1500. My cousin might just let me borrow them or he will go with. So I dont know what he feels comfortable with. So I figured I would ask someone who has put one on a trailer. But you guys have given me ideas. We might be winching it on the trailer if I cant get it running at the guys house. He lives in the country so I dont know yet if he will have a area where it will make it easier to do so. And would he be easier winching it up front or rear first. All I can tell you is I dont want any damage done. But thanks again for all your help. You guys are more helpful and nicer then the other thread I put up on this car. They just tell me to go get another car. No matter what I am getting the car I am going to look tomorrow at it. And I will look at clearances on it. If I cant get it running or something I may part it out. Either way its got good parts for my 90. But I hope I get her home in one piece. But any advice is appreciated. Ill keep you guys updated.

Re: Need some advice.

I always believed in winching them up even if running because they will come up slower. It may sound odd but if you aren't used to driving vehicles onto trailers then this will give you more control. By winching you can stop any time and check clearances and centering. I also always pull up front first so that I have immediate control of how the vehicle is centered. By pulling rear first the front would have to swing more to the side to get the same effect. And yes I use electric winch, a come-a-long is way to much work. I have done it before.
As far as grief for getting the car, don't listen to them, many many many people passed on the Firebird I bought but I felt it was worth it. It isn't running yet but it will be one day. It is your money not theirs. Other people on here have bought cars in much worse condition than mine body wise not running.
I also prefer if I have a second set of eyes when I am loading just in case I miss something.
