Clear coat

my 91z's clear coat is coming off. I was curious if it would be to difficult to buy a sprayer and do it myself? any painters have any imput? It looks like the paint is still ok Just need the clear. I've never done anything like this so any advice is welcome.

Re: Clear coat

You can't simply re-clear it, doesn't work that way. Sounds like it needs a full repaint.

Re: Clear coat

aaahhh crap lol I figured thats what I would have to do. I was just wondering if maybe there was a temp fix to make it look "ok" until I can save the money to paint it.

Re: Clear coat

Not really, I mean you can just do that panel over with paint and clear since it's black, but really if part of your car is fading or pealing, you will notice once the new panel is done the super glossy compared to the rest.

Re: Clear coat

Yea I agree, repaint, it will look very off if you just repaint one panel. You might be able to get by doing one panel and buffing out the rest of the car to bring some gloss back but I think you'll find your clear to be shot in more than one area..... Common problem on any 80's GM.

O and it's a little harder to paint a car than you might think it is... It's an acquired skill. Otherwise you'll probably get uneven coats and run it all over. If you have any extra parts practice painting on those. It's not bad once you've done it a couple times... Paint is expensive to waste....

Re: Clear coat

Yea setting the gun up is fun, and it does take practice, and a LOT of prep work, that personally is the vise I have. I can spray all day long, it's the prep work and work panels perfectly that drives me up a wall. I redid the set of doors on my bird 4 complete times (bondo-ed here and there, took it down to bare metal, repeat 3 more times) just to get it the way I wanted it cause it pissed me off so much.

Haha I hear ya, I'm repainting my 89' right now actually. Still doing bodywork from where *******s like to open there doors into my F'in door.... and found some nice filler on the right rear quarter behind the wheel just above the small ground effects piece. Somebody butchered that spot pretty bad.... O well it's all fun stuff right now! haha I'm probably not as pickey as you but it needs to look good and I'll be happy. Anything is better than the crap 1 stage that was previously on it... Red in the shade, orange in the sun... It's annoying when everyone asks if your car is orange.

Re: Clear coat

I had a truck that everyone asked if it was orange lol and it was red. But thanks men for your advice. I guess I'll just put up with it looking Sh*tty til I can have it repainted. But I still might look into learning how to do it myself, I would really like to be able to do my own body work and paint.
But as far as the body, there is no dents, dings or any filler and all the seams line up straight. So hopefully that will save me some money on the re-paint

If you can paint your own car it will save you THOUSANDS...... I bought paint for my Car using some company i just heard about that sells only online. Limited colors but base coat and clear coat combo kit and all the hardeners and reducers i need for $200 shipped to my door. We'll see how the paint comes out. I've heard good things though... Your looking at over $1500 for a paint job (from a buddy in the business, "friend discount" haha), 2k-3k for a decent one.... If you have no bodywork to do your a lot better off. It goes much faster....

THAT is the most rediculous thing I have ever read. Unless you're spraying Imron single stage, base/clear for regular automotive applications is the best protection with ease of care you can get. A good clear, like SPI universal clear is UV resistant, easy to cut and buff, easy to maintain, and has 100% better clarity and depth than any single stage paint I've ever seen. BTW, I have in fact painted cars in a downdraft booth for automotive applications, and currently paint big rigs with single stage. Funny, when a customer wants the body of the big rig and frame painted, it's always imron single stage, for durability against damage. When it comes to the cab of the truck they almost always go for base/clear, or imron/clear. Basically only town trucks get single staged everything, mostly to keep costs down.

Lunatic, if you want to learn how to start spraying, start small. Go to the junk yard, buy a fender, prep it for paint, then basecoat/clearcoat it. Cut and buff it, and move on to something else. See if you like doing it, like a lot of others have said, painting isn't a skill you're born with, it's acquired.

Re: Clear coat

Ladies and Gentlemen, please clear your car. Clear after base coat and clear after single stage for extra protection.
