So long, TGO - nevermind(car saved)

I'll miss trolling you guys. Unfortunately, my front right wheel literally broke off the studs on the way to college yesterday, and the car drove over the wheel, and up the fender, panel, molding, and paint on the door. I can't afford the $1900 the body shop wants to repair it, oh well.

the pic of the car is below

I bet there's somebody out there that could give you a hand in fixing it. That doesn't look that bad. all those parts come off easy, and are cheap to replace

That sucks.. but it could be worse. You could definitely get it back together for less than $1900. Hell, you could even do it a bit at a time if you needed to.

Wow, thats impressive. I think your car was trying to tell you it was time to change some wheel studs. Your car needs to learn what subtle means next time

Re: So long, TGO

Get some studs on it and drive it, browse craigslist when you put together a few bucks find some clean used parts and slowly put it back together.

Do you have insurance
, a deductible is cheaper than a body shop or take your time and do it all yourself.

Re: So long, TGO

looks like you could swap the fender and put a new rotor/hub on it and it would be perfectly drivable. Its all bolt on parts and if you have any mechanical ability is should be too hard to fix up, paint doesnt HAVE to be done right away.

yes just replace studs and drive it like that ebay has fenders for 70 bucks i think you can get it back on the road and work on it when you can cheaper than buying a new car as well

Re: So long, TGO

LOL. $1900 for that? Talk about a rip off. Be sensible about what you're doing here.. You have a ding in your fender that looks ugly and you're giving up on a whole car because of that? You can find fenders all day long for $50 around here, and another $50 for ground effect pieces.

You could fix that by yourself for under $400 and that's including high grade paint, clear, and primer. It's not like your quarter panels got trashed or something difficult... this is an easy fix in the scheme of things. You could be driving this again after a few hours of work.

Pull the rotor off, press in new studs, put on a used front fender, and pull out the front edge of the door... done!!!

That's what I would do and then drive that sum bisch!

Eh if he wants to leave after such minor damage, he obviously didn't really want to keep the car. Good riddance I say.

Hell his car STILL looks better than mine and mine has four wheels :P

Re: So long, TGO

Hell, I did more bodywork than that on my car!

I got the pics in my vb garage to prove it.

I got the entire car painted, new doors, hood, fenders, bumper for about $1000. And it was only $1000 because I had to pay someone to spray the entire car. If I had a place to make a booth and had an air compressor I could have done it for $400 total.

Someone else will buy it at his loss. He's delusional if he actually thinks he's going to come out ahead by quitting in any respect, though. If that's his attitude on the thing though - he'll just end up driving some grocery-getter anyway. Prius? Perhaps.

I doubt they would total that for 1200..up to him what he does with his car though. Think hes crazy for selling it because of a fender. What happens when the next one has a cat that goes bad?

Re: So long, TGO

depends on how much they value the car at...which with our cars is usually around $2500. and insurance usually totals cars when the estimated repair hits about 70%-80% of that assessed value.

Re: So long, TGO

BTW. This is a remind to torque your lug nuts with a torque wrench. 100 ft lbs with stock wheels if you have the 12mm threads. You can do it to 90-95 and be safe still. Overtorqueing or improper torque sequence can cause brake vibrations/pulsating better know as warped rotors. can cause damage to wheel studs. etc.

Re: So long, TGO

Shoot, No Way would I give up on such a cool looking, styling, good riding car like that. Over that little bit????

$1900.00? I'd be laughing all the way out the door, saying keep your fix thank you very much. They are Definately trying to rip you off. And yes they will take your money if you're stupid enough to give it to them. ( and I'm Not calling you stupid, as if you don't know you just don't know any better ).

There's so many pluses to this right off the bat. First off, he owns he car outright, he's not making any payments on the car. He didn't say anything about having Any problems with how the car drives, transmission slipping, loosing oil, compression, engine block cracked, coolant leaks, Nothing, so I can only assume that all of that's good. It's an easy and inexpensive fix, and even if he cant do the work himself or would really rather not, simply by calling around he can find an Honest mechanic that could give him a fair price and he's back in the saddle again. There's plenty of TGO members on here in his area that would be more than willing to help him out if he just asked for it I'm sure. A little compensation to show his appreciation and he's easing on down the road once more like nothing ever happened.

Anyways, that's my two cents on the deal. Hopefully he'll reconsider, but that's up to him. He may already be gone as I have not seen him respond to any of the posts so far.

In any event, whatever he decides to do I wish him well, but if it were me, I'd fix my baby and ride on. I'd learn all I could about my car and do as much of the work as I could myself, and pay someone else tpo do what I couldn't, but that's just me.

Re: So long, TGO

Replace the broken studs & CHECK THE OTHER ROTOR TOO.

As has been said more than once already & is about to be said again. That is very minor damage. Some members here have repaired FAR WORSE cars than yours.Thats just a few hundred bucks to fix, tops.

When an onwer likes his car just enough to drive, but not near enough to repair becuase of minor damage.Another 3rd gens goes to the scrap heap.It sounds like your just looking for an excuse to get something else & its a shame too. This is how these cars end up in the crusher.

Mishaps are gonna happen. You cant just expect to keep driving the damn thing ***** nilly. Are you gonna get rid of every car you own when a little something goes wrong with it?

With todays society. It seems like the younger generations treat cars like diposable items.Just drive it, throw it away when it breaks & get a new one..Cars should last a lifetime (barring acts of god, etc). You cant just toss them by the waysside. Its not a laptop or cell phone for christ sake.Your GFX's arent even busted.**** like this pisses me off (no offense)...fix it....please.

I agree! I bought most of my thirdgens not running (And some of them still dont run!) Put a little work into it, you'll be glad you did! Pride of ownership comes from blood, sweat and tears (And a flat wallet!) Get dirty and fix it.

I had some hail damage on my '00 GTP that is not very noticeable. Insurance almost totaled it because I had the transmission out at the time to rebuild it. Apparently they take things that need repaired into account when assessing.

Up here they will total anything over 14 years old.... take it or leave it...
As far as my socialist government is concerned, my car is a 22 yr old POS (with 60K on it!!!!) & is worth nothing if I get into an accident.

Regardless of it's mint condition I'd lose it!!!!

There's no way that I'd go to insurance over that fender and door... fix it or sell it!!!! & Keep the Sh*tHeads (Gov. Ins.) outta the equation

Re: So long, TGO

That sux dude
I have everything here to fix that and I'd probably do it for free (minus paint match)

Just remember how good it handles compared too almost anything out there. You will not find another car (even a 4th gen) that accelerates, goes around corners and gets 25mpg.

Everyone else check you lugnuts and notice that one of his was not on at the time of the mishap.
