Hood Louvers

Hey guys so I had question has any one painted their hood louvers? Does anyone recommend doing so? The reason I ask is because the person who owned my car before me got a shitty paint job on the car and got over spray on a few things he should not have such as my hood louvers. I have a little bit of red over spray on my hood louvers should have 'em painted or should I just try and purchase new ones. what do you guys think?

Re: Hood Louvers

I have painted a few sets and and never had any problems. Just remember to prep them really well before painting so it doesn't flake off later on.

Re: Hood Louvers

What color are you going to paint yours? What colors have you seen that came out nice? I would think maybe flat black... also what shout I do bout the over spray? Would I sand before I paint em to get the over spray off?

A clay bar might remove the over spray.

Re: Hood Louvers

Personally I would try the claybar approach. I would even try gently scraping to see if the overspray comes right off.

I know when I used to detail the exterior of my car before the PO maaco paintjob turned to trash, I would regularly wax/detail the louvers. If this has been done before you have a strong chance that the paint did not adhere well and will lift right off. Even if that is not the case, I seriously doubt the louvers were paint prepped since they were not intended to be painted in the first place, so I still say you have a decent chance.

A good example is when I POR-15d some rot on the underside edge of my driver door. the POR-15 leaked out of the door overnight and ran down the side of the car on the GFX. In the morning I was able to peel it right off because I had just applied some turtlewax 2 days earlier.

Thanks TheProject I am enjoying reading all about your build lots of info and your louvers look awesome I am definitely going to have to use your method. Thanks for the read great info should keep me busy for the next hour or so

Also can someone tell me what NOS parts stands for? I keep reading all over the forum and I have no clue what it means. Don't mind me I'm sort of a newbie to cars even though I have grown up around Camaros my whole life thanks to my dad he knows what's up that's for sure. I'm in love with my Irocz.

Re: Hood Louvers

I painted mine gold a long time ago to match the gold package on my car. I thought it looked great. The paint started to come off and one of my louvers blew off going down the road at 90 so I got another set but never got around to paint them. I attached a pic of it. NOS stands for new old stock.

Re: Hood Louvers

Ya the gold looks good on your car man. Idk what color would look good on mine... I think I prefer black on mine bc my car is red. I could see maybe doing the same color red as my car but I like the idea of touching the black up with some black paint.

Also that is strange you found another car with gold louvers didn't think there would be any others out there like that. If you guys find and other colored louvers post em here is like to see what kinda things have been done and what colors people have used.

Re: Hood Louvers

I have never seen one till that Black one.

Have you thought of just pin striping the louver along the edge left to right?

I saw a louver catching some light in a pic on here somewhere and it didn't look to bad, it was silverish. I'll have a quick hunt around for it.

See how the light catches the edge, I was wondering when I saw this if pin-striping it some colour would look any good.

Glad you are enjoying my progress. More to come in the spring when I redo my suspension and POR-15 the underside of the car.

NOS means "New Old Stock" or put another way "New Original Part". Some of those parts are not cheap as GM stopped producing them and other companies like Year One or Classic Industries don't make them.

Re: Hood Louvers

@AussirIROC66- I like the idea and I see what your talking about with the light. I think I am just gonna keep it original black. That was a pretty creative idea tho man you should hit yours up with some pinstripes then post pics very creative idea tho

@TheProject- Thanks for clarifying that for me I kept seeing that and was confused by it so thanks. Also your ride is beautiful can't wait til shes done so I can see it.

Re: Hood Louvers

When i painted my car, i used Pasticote Semi-Gloss Black on my headlight buckets and the Louvers. Both were wet sanded in steps down to 600grit and then cleaned. Turned out really good and i didnt want to spray them with an expensive automotive paint. Some small things you can get by with rattlecan.
