Rear Hatch Lifters, help!
Hi, the lifters (pneumatics/shocks/hydraulics/whatever u call them) on my back hatch have worn out to the point where they can no longer hold the hatch open. Crappy Tire wants 90 bux for a pair of them and i was wondering if they can be repaired? I'm asking around for them off some parts cars as well.

Re: Rear Hatch Lifters, help!
Don't know about repairing...might be as much as new replacement. Crappy Tire on occasion has them on sale..."Buy one, get the second one for half price". Keep an eye on the weekly CT flyers/website when a sale might be coming up. The rear hatch shocks do last a very long time compared to the front hood shocks. Do you have any Crappy Tire money to put against the price?

Don't know if you have an O'reillys up north, but I bought a set from them for around $30 apiece.
There's actually a shop called Crappy Tire, lol.

Re: Rear Hatch Lifters, help!
It's Canadian Tire, a super sized hardware store with a large automotive department...Lack of knowledgeable staff and Service in the last few years has gotten so awful it earned the name "Crappy Tire". A person has to know exactly what they are looking for when shopping there...the auto parts counter people are usually the most clueless...lol...Sometimes you'll get someone who is helpful.
Canadian Tire hatch shocks, might be one of the lowest prices around in Toronto.

What can I say? My Dad/Grandfather brought me up with the mentality of: if you're going to do something, do it right or don't waste your time. personally i think holding up the hatch with a 2x4 is a slap in Camaro's face.

Re: Rear Hatch Lifters, help!
Thanks alot guys, yeah Crappy tire is actually Canadian Tire, i used to work there. Apperantly in my Canadian tire (we were supposedly the worst canadian tire in terms of customer service in ontario) the workers in the back were paid under the table and whatnot, half the ppl on the floor cant speak english fluently and don't know how to talk/help people. And now its going soft, Canadia Tire used to be a reliable place if you needed a tool or a car part, or even some hardware (nuts/bolts) but now its turning into a mini-wallmart. All the tools are made of plastic and they carry companies like "job mate" and all this rubbish. The auto department, well some of them know their stuff but half of them don't know **** and the ones that do are busy fixing your car. They no longer have any descent hardware if you're ever looking except maybe wood screws (in which case just go to home depot/ home hardware/ Rona.) Thats the end of my CTC rant, but it looks like i'm going to be getting my shocks from them anyways, after all they do have a lifetime warranty.

Re: Rear Hatch Lifters, help!
well just to let u know the prices at part source will be exactly the same aas canadian tire because crappy tire owns partsource, the only diffrence is the people at part source know wtf there talking about, i just got a pair from them, and they work just fine, took about 15 minutes to install them both, and just so u know it really helps to have a partner there to hold up that effin heavy hatch, cuz when ur trying to put the shock to the upper part of the hatch u need some serious arm muscles to hold it open and insert it to the hatch... my opinion is just buy them...

And NAPA but they don't always have what you're looking for. PartSource is a joke, you go there to get carbon fiber "wrapping paper" to make something look like its made of carbon fiber, or you can get a shiny cover for an air filter, maybe a 4" exhaust for an import. its a really useless store to be honest.

2x4s just get in the way. A vice grips on one of the shocks does the trick just fine Although they're on my list of things to do this spring as well.

I just bought a pair today in Calgary at Auto Value (Not sure if you have those out east). They were close to $90 a pair, part number was PLI 4900.

Anyone tried Lordco? The standard prices are usually OK but I get a business discount which makes them my first stop for parts.

Re: Rear Hatch Lifters, help!
I swear I saw them at the warehouse I work at for $15 a piece (my price). I'll be working again on Saturday, I will check them out then and get back to you guys. If they are that cheap, I can ship them out from St Catharines (or Oshawa) if you guys want.
Anyways, I'll let you guys know after Saturday.

Verdict is in. I was totally off and the actual price is $30 each. Sorry, not the deal I thought it was.

Re: Rear Hatch Lifters, help!
I wound up buying both the hatch and the hood lifters at Canadian Tire a few years ago. Yeah, they're not cheap. But it beats having a mop handle to hold the hood up while looking under there. Ditto having the hatch come down on your head while trying to get something out.
Since the lifts last so long, I figured I'd just eat the cost and be done with it. Honestly, having a properly held up hood/hatch makes the cost easily worth it in the end. I cringed while laying down the money. But why bother with getting a set of junk yard lifts that are 40-50% worn out anyways?
I do feel your pain about lack of auto stores in Canada though. All the deals you hear about in the US that don't exist in Canada. Lordco has been hit and miss in my experience. Sometimes they'll be way cheaper, sometimes they're not any cheaper at all. And their "discounts" always seem to be on overpriced stuff. Like getting $20 windshield wipers with a 30% discount for $14 when Canadian Tire has regular priced wipers for $14.
