there is nothing to it, i have a monsoon out of a 02 ws-6 in my 87 gta and it wired right in same color wires and everything, however if you have steering wheel mounted audio controls it will not be functional ( the controls )

i tried this tonight, the cd player i was going to put in was a gm delco from a 99 grad prix, the first thing i found out is that i was able to pretty easily make the connection from my 89 to this 99 player, i ended up with some useless wires but i still had a solid connection and music was flowing from the speakers. but once i had that going i tried mounting the newer cd player back in the hole for it and i found out that the newer cd players are a little longer in depth and width. so putting the screws back in didnt work unless you screwed them in at an angle. also once i had it in place the bezel did not fit anymore and forcing it would def. break it. so i nixed the idea and im going aftermarket.

keep in mind the cd player that was in my car was whatever the top of line back in 1989 was, not sure what model head unit you have -

This one was out of a 98 SS. I bought a harness from a local shop and wired it with no issues. The stereo itself bolted up just fine, no fitment issues whatsoever.

AMEN Brother!!! ....most the time when I'm drivin' the Camaro, I don't even have the stereo on!!!! ...if the car audio aftermarket would make a stereo that didn't look like A$$, maybe then I'd be interested. Graphics, movies, multiple colors??????

This CD Player came from a 1993 Buick Roadmaster Wagon.Perfect fit in my 86 Iroc Z28

Mine came from a 2002 GMC/Chevy truck, so I had to remove the slide mounts and fabricate some side brackets. Other than that, no fitment issues.

Same here... I prefer to listen to the car! And with the tops always off or the top always down, it's too hard to hear the radio anyway!

And I agree... aftermarket's look and fitment for our cars is just... wrong, IMO.

Yes it does! For a moment there, I thought you'd put digital in the Daytona. But yeah, then I remembered the GTA.

Installed mine this morning. The fit was VERY tight, but it went in without having to modify the radio pod in anyway. The only things I had to do were horizontally-elongate the holes(inward) in its 'built-in' side mounting tabs so they lined-up with the pod's; grind down the edges of those mounting tabs(because they're too wide for the pod); and cut-off the bottom of the driver's side mounting tab(because it covered the hole in the pod that the face plate mounting tab pops into).

I like the red numeric display, and I look forward to seeing all lit-up tonight. BUT, BUT, BUT...

It doesn't play writeable cds!!! These weren't in mpeg/mp3 format, which I wouldn't have been surprised about it not playing. I'm talking about Real Audio, the full-size files that, I thought, all cd players were supposed to be able to read. All of my home players read them, and the cd player in my truck reads them(it's an '06 though).

And this radio is a 2000 model. Who'd have thought a 2000 model wouldn't play them?! It's my own fault, I guess, for not inquiring about that before I bought it. But I never even considered that it would NOT play real audio cds!!! You have no idea how bummed I am right now!

what radio is that? i also have a digital dash and don't want one from a normal GM car with the green color, i want the pontiac red/orange. is that out of a 4th gen TA?

Ok, I'm not so bummed now, lol. I started thinking about technology back in 2000. Burning cds wasn't new, so why wouldn't this unit play writeables? It should. Afterall, CD-Rs had been around for awhile, right? But I burn CD-RWs, and those might be too new for a 2000 model year unit.

So I did an online search about this model radio, and I found that, yup, it does play writeables: CD-Rs, not CD-RWs.

Just gotta get some CD-Rs and burn my stuff all over again. I'm ok with that.

I'd suspect his is the same as mine, model #09380152, although there are two other identical-looking units with different model numbers. Yes, it's from/for Pontiacs, hence the red illumination and the gray buttons. Mine even says "Delco Pontiac" over the diplay window.

Edit: I found one burned CD-R that a friend made for me awhile back, stuck it in, and... it worked! So it's confirmed... definitely plays CD-Rs. Regarding CD-RWs, I don't think they even came out until around '02, did they? That would explain things.

Will it play CD-RW discs? Or will it only play CD-R's?

That's good info to know, but in a few years it's going to be harder and harder to find CD-R's...everything is going to CD-RW and DVD format.

If it's going into your '06 Cobalt, it'll prolly plug right in... but I can't say that for sure because I don't know if the harness changed from '02 to '06.

So if it's going into an '87 IROC(like your screenname), then you'd definitely need something... that one or something like it. If no Bose, then this will prolly work. But if you have Bose, then you'd prolly need a different one than this, but it would prolly be very similar.

But if it's going into the '89 Formula in your profile signature, then no, you won't need any adapters. Your harness will plug right into the newer radios. The seller prolly meant it's for cars up to '89(meaning thru '88), because '89 is the model year the harness and antenna connection changed.

Also, if it's going into a Firebird, then using my 'expert' photoshop skills on the pic in your link, lol, I'll show what needed to be changed to make it fit the radio pod: the top hole in each mounting tab had to be elongated inward; the bottom hole in the left tab needed to be elongated inward(angling downward); the edges of both tabs needed to be ground down because they stuck out too far; and the bottom of the left tab had to be cut-off completely because it covered the hole that the face trim plate pops into.

Someone posted a link above to the complete removal of those tabs to make the radio work with thirdgen mounting tabs, but it involves removing the shell of the radio because those tabs are literally part of the shell, all one piece.

Ive heard that pioneer makes an aftermarket radio for are cars that doesnt require a dash adapter or anything for fitment anyoen know where to get one?

Pioneer offers two models, each with 'all the bells and whistles.' They've been available for years, and you should still be able to find them at just about anyplace that sells car stereos. Here are two online sources: www.crutchfield.com ; and it's shown on sale at www.circuitcity.com

Looks great. That is how mine came out also. I used a dremmel to cut the back end and the metal brackets on the side of the radio. Plug and Play otherwise on the 91. Wiring harness was the same.. Mine came from my 99 Grand Prix.

us camaro guys have it much easier it just swaps in with no changes
but i also noticed that the pontiac radios are longer
but also ive noticed that there are differant firebird radio pods my girlfreinds stock 92 pod held the monsoon unit with no problems
but when i got her a much better shape pod from an 89 it wouldnt fit i had to do the cutting you talked about

Hey Al, did that radio have the mini cooling fan on the back? I ask because I've heard of other people having difficulty getting that radio in there because of that fan. They resort to cutting holes into their heater ducts to make it fit. But this wasn't a problem for you?

It does have the fan on the back, and no it presented no interference problems for installation. I hear that Firebirds are different and that this type of radio can interfere with the heat ducts.

What kind of speakers are people using with these newer GM radios. I've got the bose system in my gtp and I'd like to get a similar sound into my IROC. I'm going tomorrow to pull a stereo. Can anyone make a reccomendation?

I used Pioneer 3-ways front and rear. Removed the connector from the speaker end of the factory harness and crimped on some female spades to take the speaker terminals.

I finally got my 4th Gen stereo installed yesterday and honestly, it was the easiest radio install I've ever done. Sure, it's out of a 2002 Camaro, and I'll miss the red display but I like the tuner knobs rather than the equalizer.
Here are some pictures of my install so far. As it stands, the radio face itself is larger than the original opening in the radio bezel that coveres that area. It is 1/2 inch taller than the opening and 3/8 wider.

Here are some pics of my install. You can see that instead of a slider it's got the ears. Instead of elongating the holes I simply measured and drilled new holes behind it. The new holes do not interfere with the old ones in any way so if I ever wanted, I could go back to an original radio. If you want to see a little better picture you can click on my cardomain site in my signature. Oh yeah...you'll have to forgive the dust...that's just a little bit of New Mexico getting into EVERYTHING...

i purchased the Pontiac deck pictured above, and mine hits the back of the pod. the only way to get it in all the way is to remove the four screws and remove ALL the support in the back of the pod, the vents, everything. i think i can fabricate some type of bracketing for it though, hopefully it will allow me to retain use of the stability stud behind the deck.

I'll post up pictures of said bracketing.

I had to cut a notch in my pod, but all of the brackets are intact. I removed the pod and marked where it was hitting with a sharpie. I ues a dremel to trip it. None of what I did to modify it is visible and all the structural integrity is intact.

When I put my 4th Gen stereo in my 84 T/A I didn't have to trim anything, I only had to modify the brackets on the radio slightly to match up. Other than that, everything matched up perfectly.

Hey guys i found a guy whose gonna give me a pretty good deal on a Monsoon CD player from a 2000 Trans Am. My car is a 1992 Camaro. Will this fit in with no modifications or will I have to do some minor trimming?

I definitely want a stock CD player in my car, but if i ever go to sell my car in the future I want to be able to put the original radio back in with no problems.

any input would be GREATLY appreciated because I'm looking into purchasing this stereo tonight!

You shouldn't require any modifications except maybe the mounting brackets on the stereo itself. They are different from what you have and may require some modifications. If you look at my post, the 'wings' on mine required me to drill a new location for the mounting screws. Some models have a rail system for mounting...just depends on the style you're getting.

I put one in a 86 trans am and most of the inside of the pod had to be removed. My radio had the slide rails which was removed because with the slide rails it wouldnt fit at all. The hardest part was getting the mounts in the right position so the radio was level.

I just put a monsoon unit from a 00 Camaro into the 97 dash in my 91 Z28 and I need two remote wires, one to run to my power antenna and one to my amp. My question is this, do these radios have these or did I waste my $27.00 at the junk yard?

If you have the part of the wire harness that actually plugs into that radio from your donor car, it's retardedly easy. 1-for-1 wiring...they're even labeled for you and the best thing about it, it's GM color coded so you really can't get it wrong unless your colorblind. However, if you don't, you will need to by an adapter kit from a company whos name escapes me at the moment. I'll research it and post it tonight unless someone else knows what I'm talking about.

If you've already bought this, then you've probably already learned this, but Pontiac and Camaro radios have cosmetic differences in their appearances.

Pontiac radios have gray controls, and Camaros have black ones. The face of a Pontiac radio might even be lighter in color than the black face of a Camaro radio, too. The display/lighting on a Pontiac radio will be red/red, whereas a Camaro radio is something else(green/white, I think?). Also, a Pontiac radio will most likely say "PONTIAC" on it.

So if you're ok with those cosmetic differences in your Camaro, then you'll be ok, because either should connect, fit and work just fine. But from looking at other posts above in which people put the newer radios into either Camaros or Firebirds, it seems that everyone had to make some modifications to the mounting flanges. So you might have to do that, too.

if you guys want an aftermarket stereo that fits like a glove without adapters, kenwood and pioneer both make din-1/2 stereos. in other words it will fit without using a "dash kit". the only draw back, is that they are more expensive. examples:

my stereo is just one of the single din pioneer priemer units, i use a dash kit and the fit and finish is ok. its sounds good, and i already had it paid for. so i used what i had. the car had a pioneer unit when i bought it but no faseplate so i installed i a stereo i had in my truck. i cant complain, but if you guys want something that will fit like a factory unit the above options are decent.

Actually, I ended up getting a real sweet Monsoon one out of a 2000 Camaro. I want to put it in, I just don't want to hack anything up to do it because I could see myself putting the stock cassette deck back in there one day for "Classic" purposes. Will it go in without having to **** around with everything else?
