Re: headunit problems
any other stereo stuff in the car? amps? how did you physically attach the deck to the car, solder/crimp/etc? may help a bit in diagnosing things

Re: headunit problems
How old is the unit? It might be the finals (amp in the radio) cutting off due to getting to hot. if it isn't a ground or connection problem i would say go get the head unit checked be for you hurt the rest of it.

Re: headunit problems
the radio's not drawing much for power (less than a window motor or door lock), so unless the vehicle's been sitting for a loooong time without being driven and the battery's almost dead, you've got something else of issue.
i would just double check your crimp connections to make sure nothing is loose (also check to make sure the power/ground wires aren't getting warm; good sign of a bad connection).

Re: headunit problems
Ditch those butt connectors. Even cutting, stripping, twisting, and wrapping the wires in electrical tape without soldering is better than butt connectors that don't take much force to pull apart, and it's cheaper in the long run. You may want to do this when you replace the speakers, especially the dash speakers, as you WILL have to rewire those for the aftermarket speakers. Also, you may need to run the ground wire to one of the grounds under the console depending on the condition of the factory harness for a cleaner ground with less resistance.
Of course, I've been having problems with the rest of the car's stereo harness, so, since every single wire is out of the car, I'm soldering every bad connection together and covering it with heat shrink tubing and then wrapping it in tape (like GM did originally). Which is what I recommend you do, since I'm sure you're going to be repairing quite a few wires in the engine compartment, and those wires absolutely NEED to be done right to avoid coming apart and leaving you at the side of the road scratching your head.
