Replaced starter and fusible links still wont crank.

I've done a lil searching a n d can't seem to find a solution to my problem. First of all I have an 86 camaro bit it appears to have a 92 dash amd steering column in it
(I double checked then Vin on the title and the car they do matxh) also it has a carbed 305 with a th350 trans. I got the car put a batery in it and it started fine for a couple times. Then nothing. So I assumed it was the starter. Replaced the started and then I had no power any where. Assuming it was the common fusible link problem at the starter. I went ahead and replaced them. And now I have power back to the dash. Exterior lights. Etc. But When I Turn The Key Still Wont Crank. Assuming it's a possible ignition switch problem. With it being an 86 car the VATS system shouldn't be causing any issues even though it's a newer dash and column right ?!! Any way to track down the problem. The wiring on this car seemed to be done half a@$ed before.

You don't state when condition the battery is in.

When trying to diagnose electrical problems, the first thing to do is to confirm that the battery is fully charged and when load tested, will provide the current necessary to turn the engine over.

Re: Replaced starter and fusible links still wont crank.

Bought the battery brand new. And double checked the battery does have a full charge. The only thing I'm thinkin is a fusable link in the ground cable from battery to the starter. I'm wondering if there's a reley somewhere I can't locate.

Car Is Not Cranky . . . . SO I AM !!!!!!

Use voltmeter or test light (the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) to probe the wire going to the solenoid power input.

Make the wire long enuff to bring into the cockpit.

Now, when you try to crank, is there power?

If yes, connect a voltmeter across the M terminal of the starter and ground.

Make the leads long enuff to take the voltmeter into the cockpit.

Under normal circumstances, when cranking you will see about 9 volts on the meter.

On the occasions the starter fails to crank note the voltage.

The voltage will tell you what the problem is and what direction to turn.

If it’s about 12 while you are trying to crank, but the starter is not turning - the problem is in the starter.

If it’s under 8 while trying to crank - the problem is excessive resistance in the starting circuit.

Therefore if it is in the starting circuit you can move the probe you applied to terminal M at the starter, to the positive terminals at the solenoid, then keep moving up the line till the problem shows itself VIA increased voltage.

Happy Racing !

stupid thought, but have you check your neutral safety switch?
