Starter problems what the hell am I missing
Hi I built a 383 stroker motor the rotating assembly was a kit so it came with its own 153 tooth flex plate I got a mini starter that bolts up for 153 and 168 flex plate if I use the holes closest to the flex plate the starter hits the flex plate if I move it over it obviously doesn't hit. What the hell am I missing I set the starter on my old 305 block and it's the same deal

i'd guess that the starter is made wrong... throw the mini starter in the dumpster and get a good factory starter- i love the LT4 Vette starter in my car..

Re: Starter problems what the hell am I missing
I have the same set up and I finally after going through several mini starters I found a factory mini for a 1995 chevy pickup. It bolted right on and cranks well even when headers are hot. Unless you spend $400 on a mini starter you will always have problems and eat up your flywheels.

Re: Starter problems what the hell am I missing
I just went through this as well, Starter is not made wrong. Put three shims between the block and the starter. Then I put a shim between the nose of starter and the starter block. I ended up with about 3/8 of inch between the starter gear and the flex plate. It did not look like a multi starter would work but it does. Prior to this, the starter gear would engage too far, causing the flex plate to hit and hold the gear. Hope this helps. By the way, this starter is from a 90 2500 pick up.. Not that it makes a big difference.
