When I bought my car it already had a nice set of pioneer's installed under the sail panels but they push out a little. Does anyone have a nice set of 6x9's installed under your sails that don't poke out?

I have a set of Pioneers in mine that fit pretty well, but I'm working on making room for a pair of 8" subs (one in each panel). Trick is to find .5 cubic feet of air space in there and seal it up. Looks like they will fit, however, they will stick out a bit. I should still be able to cover them up with the trim panel.

I know Polk and Infinity make 6x9s that will fit perfect as I have used both. Make sure you isolate the speakers well, or you get some awful rattling...I know this from experience.

you can also use the round 6 1/2" speakers without issue, just have to make a mounting baffle. It'll open up an even larger selection of speakers to chose from. My last setup was crystal 6 1/2" coaxes and they fit perfectly behind the factory panels.

I have a couple pioneers too...ill check the model later but they fit perfect...well they did til i ripped the sail panels out

I have Alpine 6x9 Type S and they fit without sticking out. However, unless you are going to amp them or use a sub they dont have alot of bass.

i have an 8" Audiobahn sub in the sailpanel and it only pushes the sailpanel out slightly - hardly noticeable. it was a fairly easy install. just had to trim some metal out of the speaker bracket and a little plastic on the interior panel.

they sound pretty good. they're not amplified to their max potential though. might be different if i threw a lot of wattage at them. only problem i have so far is the pressure in the sail panel cavity vibrates the jamb vent which is annoying sometimes.

I've got Alpine's front and back, i believe the 6x9's are the SPS-69C3, no problem fitting at all, the sail panel barely touches but it does not really push the sail panel out, and they sound great

Can you post a pic of what you have? Some outer frames of 6x9's differ and that may be what the issue is, but I've also seen a wood backer/insulator used before as well.

Sorry for taking so long to reply to my thread guys....my car is stored at my Grandmothers house and I keep forgetting my camera.

I attached some pictures. I also have a couple other sets of 6x9's I've pulled from cars at the local pull and pay to resell but I think I'll try out their fitment and sound in my car. I have a set of DHD Quadraxials(40$ on ebay) a couple of 300 watt sony xplods and the pioneers pictured, all of which are junk but I got 'em so I might as well use 'em. The sound system rebuild comes after the motor.

I have a feeling some of my cars interior has been rewrapped. I have seen cars with plastic sail panel rigids, but mine is kind of a cardboard type stuff. Anyone know if that came stock? This may also represent why I'm having fitment issues.

That's weird, I've never seen that before. The sail panels should be flat on the back and not bulge as it shows. It looks like it was cut (or pushed out) in that area or something. So that piece in the center of the triangle must stick out quite a bit then? Whats the back of the sail panel look like?

They used cardboard with metal clips early on and plastic in the later years. I don't know when they made the change though.

The sounds right then because I have been looking at 90-92 cars here lately and they have all been plastic. But I know the sails have been recovered because they have 2 sided sticky tape at the top and no hole for a hanger screw.

I meant to take a picture of it but if you look from the side you wouldn't think it would push on the panel. However if you push on the bubble its definately the speaker. I'll do some test fits on Monday, maybe my car is awkward =P

Maybe the cardboard is broken and sticks out in the places where it's no longer connected. If you can, try to get the newer plastic ones and recover them. If it were me I might see if you can remove or trim the part of the speaker that sticks out if you can (or is that a really small speaker? lol). You should be able to run a straight edge across the plastic panel opening to see where it sticks out farther than the rest.

I believe both versions used staples and glue to attach the fabric to the backing.

Thats not a bad idea. I may attempt doing that as well, I hadn't thought to look but chances are good that trim piece is removable so I'll see if it gives me enough room.

yeah my polks are doing the same thing, not to the same degree though lol its only really noticable when ive got the door open lol

to the OP i know that polks and infinity's will fit in there perfectly with no issues

and ive got plastic sails in my 89 that are covered and have a hanger screw ive never seen them attached with double sided tape before

Guess these are just the speakers to avoid if you own a third gen

But the sails are pretty much stuck like that as well so I guess I'm in the market for some new ones....

I have a set of Rockford Fosgate Prime 6x9's and they fit perfect, sound awesome too, good bass for a 6x9 and great highs.

As for your sail panels it looks like someone had speakers that stuck out even farther and they forced the panels on and broke them. I would look around and try and get a set of the later plastic backed panels.

Memphis reference series in all four corners, JL w3 10s in the back The dash speaker on the drivers side hit the gauges but not the pad...No worries though its just a little angled now.

I have Pioneer Premier 3 ways that fit nicely.

Reading through the thread some more. I use 2 800w 10" Kicker free air subs and a 1500w Alpine V12 for bass. The four front speakers are powered by a 400w Alpine 4 channel amp with 2 seperate crossovers. I high pass the 6x9s in the B pillars at 80hz and the 3"/dome tweeter component dash speakers at 100hz with caps on the dash speaks. This is a very loud, very clean sound system with bright crisp highs and back pounding bass. The Premier 6x9s have a decent bass cone but excellent midrange and tweeters.

technically yes. however, if you're trying to accurately trying to reproduce music, you really dont want any sound coming from behind you. rear speakers are meant as "fill" and usually more for the benefit of rear passengers, not the driver. in this aspect, you're best just going with a coax speaker and spending the difference in building up a better front stage (components in the kicks/door, amp to power 'em, and proper processing power to tweak em).

good advice - I am going to take it and use the 6-1/2 coax in sail panels. I have 82 Berlinetta. I would like to put another pair of 6-1/2 in the door panels? I have pioneer 4 x 60 amp. then i could run all 4 from the amp. I could run the dash off the head unit or just disconnect it since I think the 4 qty 6-1/2 would be sufficient? what are your thoughts?

keep it simple - if you're going to put speakers in the door, don't use dash speakers. they'll only serve to mess with the sound and cause more of a headache when you're trying to balance levels.

Did you guys have any problem hooking up the speakers? I was looking at Curtchfield and was thinking about buying two GM harnesses. Do those make the swap out easy? I'm not too tech savy so I'm not untirely sure how to switch the wires...

I am also getting my speakers from crutchfield - I decided to disconnect the dash speakers and redirect those wires to put speakers in the doors. that way I can use 4qty 6-1/2 speakers total - 2 in the doors and 2 in the sail panels, all run off a 4 channel amp, 60 watts x 4. I am going to get the JL Audio C2-600X 6-1/2 speakers. Crutchfield said they would fit both the doors and the sail panels. they checked the door depth and the sail panel depth. they are also giving me a speaker bracket to mount the sail panel speakers in so they will fit the existing 6 x 9 hole.

also getting the harness kits, makes things easy. they are very good and will walk you through what you need to make everything work.

Well I just ordered the JL Audio C2 4'' speakers that I'm going to drop into the dash, and then further down the road (once I am done with other maintance I need to do like new shocks) I'm going to get 6.5's for the rear and run them off an amp. To be honest I don't know how to hook up an amp so for the time being I'm just running everything off the aftermarket headunit. But once I find a good enough of a tutorial I'll buy an amp and then later the 6.5's

those adapters are a waste of money, clip the factory connecter and butt connect the speaker wires to the appropriate wire.

i believe the standing rule with gm is the lighter of the two in front is positive, and in the back the darker of the two is positive, i never ever ever use those stupid harnesses, theyre just a waste and i do this for a living lol

You almost got that right. The lighter colored one is Positive and the darker is the Negative.

This shows it the other way around, and I've always used the darker color in the pair as positive.

I've always ays used the opposing ones and I've always gotten them in phase every time, then again I've only worked on newer gm's, like 02 and up silverados mostly, maybe they swapped it I dunno I just ran my own wires for my speakers since they run to my amp lol

As long as you're consistent, you'll stay in phase and the speakers should still sound good. Oh, my radio is one of those 2002 and up truck radios, and for me, the dark wire of the pair is positive. Just stay consistent.
