I have been repairing these radios for several years now as a hobby. I never had a use for an mp3 player before but now that I have had so many request to look in to it (I have all the schematics) I find it superior to having a cassette or a cd player.
So yes I did this myself.
I mounted mine under the dash switches left of the heater control.

Manta's a really good guy! I've had the pleasure of dealing with him on parts and talk to him on the phone.
Manta's radio is still just a 2 board radio and easy to put the aux in as well.

I never understood why you guys cut the cassette instead of the radio... If you do the radio, there is no need for switches or having a cassette in there like that. You can have it automatically switch from radio to Aux when the cable is plugged in.

I put one of these in my '88 GTA. Only difference with mine being that I used a 4th Gen CD player when I ditched the (IMO terrible looking) radio control wheel. (Don't cringe too bad, I've got the wheel, controls, and radio saved in a box). I bought the remanned unit off of eBay with the aux jack already in it. The jack is just to the right of the graphic equalizer controls. Mine is spliced into the radio circuit, no need for a CD to be in it to use the aux jack.

Here is a link I found that has perfect step by step instructions with pictures. I just did this to mine and the jack at Radio Shack was $2.69 and the wire at Home Depot was $.99. Does not get any easier than this. I just got to find nice place to mount the jack as I did not want to put it in the front of the radio.

That is without a doubt the easiest way to make it work! Thank you for your input!
This will work on the 2 board radios but not the GTA steering wheel controlled radios.
They are all intergrated modules (No cables or wires)

Anyone know how they mount the jack on the ones commonly sold on ebay? I like the black flush look but if it's not threaded with a nut holding it on (like the one mantaguy posted), then what's holding it?


I was referring to the video OP posted. If you watch the video you'll notice a switch needing to be flipped.

The reason for the switch is for the GTA steering wheel controlled radios. They are all integrated modules. It is much easier to fool the radio with a switch rather than tearing out a 2 circuits on a pc board.

I followed the instructions. The hardest part was modifying the faceplate, so the plug fits behind, (Dremel tool). Only took 1hr 40 min. Works awesome, and sounds great.

Is it you that is selling these ridiculously priced units? This is the second thread I have seen you post that link in. The Idea is not to pay over $100 for a factory head unit. Besides if anyone on a budget that is not really into digging into their radio for an AUX input you can easily add one from yard parts dirt cheap.

I put one in my old tahoe. For thirdgen owners you would have to hide the slave cd/tape deck behind the dash (GM made either tape or cd as separate units). This tricks the delco head unit to think there is an aux line connected (rather then buying an expensive adapter). I face mounted this one but as I say for those who do not want to dig into the radio can just splice in a jack from the main radio harness. Again they practically give these units away at the junk yard.

The 1/8 plug goes directly to the amp, without seeing the circuit board

I would assume the cassette and radio both have access to the same amp circuitry so again whats the difference ?

I have the one of those adapters in my Sable and it works OK as long as the music is loud, but when it's not I can hear a clicking noise and if there is a lengthy pause between songs the cassette player starts searching the other side of the cassette, and I have push the tape button again for it to resume play.
I bought an adapter that plugs into the back of the radio, and tricks it into thinking my iPhone is a CD changer so it is a CD
quality sound now.
Another difference is the adapter has an ugly wire sticking out of it and the cassette motor can be noisy.

Personally, I have not tried the cassette adapter, heard to many bad things about them (like above) I have tried a FM adapter(available at any Walmart, $10)

Wasting their time with a cassette radio? I say no because I wanted to keep the OEM look in the interior.
I look at it this way, 8 track tapes, long gone,,,cassettes, pretty much long gone,,,today's cd's pretty much on their way out to due to technology going to the mini cd's.
At least with an Ipod or mp3 Player, you can carry up to 1000 songs in your shirt pocket.
The aux input bypasses the radio and cassette right to the splitter and amp section.

I've 5000+ songs on my iPhone. I also tried the FM modulator, It was worse than the cassette adapter especially when on trips when there are radio stations on the same frequency.

I have used a cassette adapter with no issues whatsoever...............I do not see the advantage sound wise to put a mini plug in a cassette deck.

I mp3 plug will sound as good or better than a CD. A cassette deck will sound no better than a cassette.

Highly questionable since there is no actual tape in the adapter and the magnetic tape is what holds the frequency response down on a cassette....................

I agree frequency range on a cassette versus a cd per say or even a mini plug with a mp3 player attached that had the mp3 encoded at the highest possible bitrate.

Since most use a much lower bit rate to fit more songs on their player and also since their no actual tape in the cassette adapter I think your logic is flawed and this is a waste of time on a cassette head unit.

So you carry on..................

man, I'm just saying if your ears aren't good enough to hear the blur and mud of a cassette adapter, then you're right, the Mp3 isn't going to be any better. I used them for years and never thought twice about it, then I started using a MP3 input stereo, and the difference is night and day. (same files from the same player)

Don't talk to me about an MP3, by nature they are designed to have the highs and lows cut off to lower the file size.

In short, your FOS. Difference is not night and day and never will be with the same MP3 file.................

I'm 43, and a professional musician and sound engineer. I do this for a living Bud. I am also blessed with a hearing spectrum of a teenager. It's a known fact that as people age, they lose the ability to hear certain frequencies. I guess that's what has happened to you. You just can't hear anymore. It's a shame to grow old.

as far as being little.. I haven't been little in a long time.. I'm 6'8" and over 260 lbs.

As pictured in my previous post I had a cassette tape adapter for a few months. It looked ghetto and sounded terrible. I then modded the exact tape deck to accept a headphone jack and the quality was much better and had a louder sound overall.

Yes there IS a difference between using those cassette tape adapters and a AUX input on the same unit. But if you don't hear a difference then I guess you don't need to do the mod.

There maybe no actual tape but there is an adapter that looks like a tape with a wire sticking out. For this adapter to work the tape player has to think there is a tape so the motor for the tape is on and has it own noise and at times can be quite annoying.

I had mine in my Sable and it would make a clicking sound and between songs if there was a long silent period (15 seconds or so) the player would think it was at the end of the tape and begin seeking which would require you put the push tape button to get it going again.

I highly recommend going another way. The only good point for the adapter is that it is cheap.

That method works just fine if you have a 2 board radio as shown. If you have a radio with a CDM module the procedure is completely different.
