plates vs bazooka tubes

So which sounds better? Two decent sized (10s or 12s) in a plate setup, or a well placed 10" bazooka tube... either the passive kind that requires an amp, or the active ones with the built-in amp.

lol ok Jim I've heard you say that plates suck before. What exactly is the reason for this? I have a friend with 2 MTX Thunder 4000s on a plate in his T/A, and he said that no bazooka tube could sound as good as his setup. Is he full of it or what? I'd imagine that 2 12s should hit a lot harder than one 10, but I'm no expert on acoustics.

Mr J, I had 4 12s in a setup that was essentially like a plate, and the single 10" tube that I put into a friend's TA hit just as hard and sounded FAR better. After that system got swiped, I installed a pair of JBL GT 12s in a plate. It was not nearly as loud as my friend's single 10" and didn't sound as good. I then built my box, and using the same JBL 12s and the same amp, the system came alive. It was suddenly substantially louder than my friend's tube, and sounded better too. It's just not possible to isolate the rear soundwave with a plate, and without doing so, the sound and the output just fall apart. I'm not at all a fan of bazooka tubes, but given the choice between the tube and a plate, I'll take the tube every time. Unless you're getting a good deal on a used Bazooka, your money can go farther by buying an empty 10" tube, buying a good driver to go into the tube, and then buying an amp to power it.

I have been a box and plate guy for years. Recently I decided to go budget and put a 10in non-powered bazooka into the rear well of my 82. I was amazed at what it can do, at the least it can make your hair stand on end, the bass is tight and it fits perfectly.

Now it probably won't sound as good as a preformed box setup with JL audio subs(more than twice the price) but it will be adequate and free up some money for go-fast goodies.

Jim's opinions, as far as I'm concerned, are right on.

Both suck, but if you had to make a choice, go with a tube. But if you're serious about quality, get 1 solid 10 with a decent amp. That'll get you way better quality than either of the others, for not too much more $$.
