Soft idle, really rich

Just last night my car started to idle rough, it's running really rich, and the idle is very quiet, like a kitten purring. It will sputter out and die if I don't keep up the revs in gear. Checked all the basics - ignition, filters, cleaned carb, no vacuum leaks, and no codes. Once off idle it runs smooth and strong, but still quite rich, and lots of afterfire in the exhaust. Could this be a sensor problem, or a carb problem (factory CC Qjet)?
