I've been having consistency problems with this carb every since I've had it. But for the most part has been ok for two years.
For a couple weeks now I've had an issue with it not starting. I cleaned it for the fifth time and blew out a metal shaving. I'd like to shove it up Barry Grant's ***.
The car finally started but idles really rich. All other throttle positions seem ok. It was blowing smoke, backfiring out the exhaust and all the plugs are now black.
Turning the idle mixture screws in did NOTHING until I turned the last one all the way in, then the motor would die out.
Could something still be lodged in an idle air circuit or could I have another problem?
I think I'm going to try cleaning it once more with lots of pressure and then its going in the trash or off to the fine Barry Grant.

I would get a rebuild kit and go through the whole thing first. Set everything to stock and then try adjusting the carb. Invest in some air bleeds too wouldnt hurt.
Finally figured some things out. The not starting issue was crap in the carb. The poor idle is an ignition issue. I hooked up an old holley 600 and still had the exact same problem. The edelbrock I used earlier had a bad internal leak but it was all I had at the moment. Since it started with that carb, I thought it was an all carb problem.
The ignition issue was due to having the wires from the dizzy to box swapped. I had changed the box during the issue. The wires were swapped because a wire coming out of the dist. was purple, the wire coming from the box was also purple. The connector was lopped off, so it made sense to me that purple goes to purple. Nope. After fixing that it wouldn't even start and the box is now blinking, so there is an internal box issue it seems, probably from having the wires backwards.
One problem solved, another made. Can it get more frustrating.....metal shavings and poorly colored wires.
