What carb should i get?

I need a new carb. I have an Edelbrock 600cfm on top of my 383, fully built, forged ect and SHOULD have 500hp if tuned correctly. I have a manual transmission (t56) and this car is my daily driver. I would like a more expenisve carb, but im sort of low on funds right now, so if i can just get a good carb that isnt in as bad condition as mine that would be great. I just rebuilt my carb and it was in bad shape. Also one of the floats is bent.

A guy was suposed to trade a holley 750 dp for my edelbrock, but he never showed up. I found a Holley 850 with mechanical secondaires in very nice shape from a guy locally for $250. Is this to much carb for my engine? Also i know nothing about some other carb manufacturues such as demon, are they good? Also what about a mechanical secondary quadrajet?

Sorry for the question bombardment.. just need some help. thank you

To fully use an 850, a 100% volumetric efficiency 383 would need to spin about 7500 RPMs. So, it's a little big. BUT, engines tend to put out a little more power when "over-carb'd", for what that's worth.

Quadrajets aren't called "mechanical secondary" because the air flow through the secondaries isn't only controlled by the butterflies connected to the throttle. A q-jet would be a decent carb for the daily driver part, but finding an intake that will both mount a spread bore carb and support 500 HP will be pretty much impossible (without an adapter).

If/when budget allows, look into Quick Fuel Technologies, Proform, AED Performance. All have Holley-type carbs that they either make or modify.

If you get a Demon, assume it will need a complete going through to clear passages, ensure it's put together correctly.

In the meantime, the 850 wouldn't be a bad route.

Before you do trade, I would see if he would let you put it on your motor. Or atleast see it run on his. Unless you know the guy pretty well. If you dont know alot about carbs, you could get one that is a basket case and not know it. Just a heads up.

I agree with that when using a dual plane intake manifold, but I've found with a single plane manifold going "under-carb'd" definitely produces positive results.

To the original poster: If your car really is daily driven I'd suggest sticking closer to the 750 area. I don't usually recommend Edelbrock carbs but the Thunder AVS series is a great line for a little bit more than the Performer series. A Holley Street Avenger 770 (PN: 0-80770) might be perfect for your combo, although I don't know what manifold you've got. Hopefully a dual-plane for street manners.

Vacuum secondaries are more than adequate for the street.
