'91/'92 highrise Z28 spoiler mod, *Finished, See Post #121!*

I'm picking up a high rise '91/'92 Z28 spoiler on Tuesday to try out and see if I can work some magic with it on my convertible. Why? Because I was racing a friend's '02 SS today and at about 110mph the rear spoiler on my car came off, luckily the driver side end tab held it on just enough to where it didn't fall onto the highway and get crushed. I still have it and in good usable condition, but now that it's not on the car, I have a clean slate to work with and am thinking I might be able to get that high rise spoiler to work pretty good for me.

Re: Possibly going to be trying out the '91/'92 high rise spoiler mod

Take some pictures along the way if you don't mind, so I can see how you did it. I feared I might have to shave the side cap spoilers, because if I didn't like the look or got tired of it, I'd have to find new side caps to put on and they're impossible to find it seems. Have you thought about just trimming the bottom ends of the high rise to match the curve of the side caps?

Holy geez, that's crazy. Was maybe one of the end bolts already broke so the wind had a place to start ripping on it.
For once I'm glad my verts probably couldn't do 110

Ya I know you've got some, I just don't have money for them at the moment. I'm getting the spoiler for a really good price. Tell ya what, hold onto a set of the side pieces and WHEN I have cash for them I will take them from you

Re: Possibly going to be trying out the '91/'92 high rise spoiler mod

if i where u i would pic up a second set of side spoilers and shave those down instead that way u keep ur nice blue ones untouched if u get tired of the look or dont like how it turned out i got a buddy thats on here his names ted gerlach. thats who i got my side spoiler from and i believe hes got a few more, or he can get them no problem, he did me a nice deal on mine altho i traded parts i know hes honest and would recomend him to anyone.. if u need parts hes ur guy.. i never thought about shaving the high rise spoiler to fit the side spoilers altho thats not a bad idea but i think it would require more work to do that.. and it might not look right.. but if u do deside to go that route i would be very interested in seeing how it goes.

The side pieces come off but the permanent thing you gotta mess with is the dip in the trunk kid for the 3rd light. What are you gonna do with that, fill it over smooth and paint? I guess there's no easy way of keeping a 3rd tail light with this is there?

Re: Possibly going to be trying out the '91/'92 high rise spoiler mod

well im going a whole other route with my car im turning mine into a 2seater. i was going to take off the roof panel cover and trunk lid and build a skeleton (sp?) frame and fiber glass it into one complete piece that would lift up from hinges behind the tail lights and lock down with the stock roof panel cover hooks, i know it sounds extensive work wise but it would work if u think about it.. u can still be able to pop it open with the switch and it will still lock down like stock.. only problem with it is that i wont have complete axcess (sp?) to my trunk which i really dont care bout becuase thats ganna be used up for my stereo amps, to keep them hidden out of the way and safe. my back seat area that will be covered by the one big piece will have a fiberglass box holding either 4 10in subs and 2 6x9 speakers or 2 12in subs and 2 6x9 speaker. but as for u i would either pick up a spare trunk lid and have a piece welded on to cover the indent like u would for a shaved door handle or sand it down to bare metal seal it and cut a piece of mdf board in there and fiber glass it over to make it smooth and sealed and go from there and in maybe even mold the high rise spoiler on in the process either way is really up to u.. but i would really consider picking up another trunk lid just incase u decide to go back to the orignal look and that way u wont have to repaint if u dont like the way it looks with the highrise. i know where i can get a cheap trunk lid in good shape pm me and ill send u his number. i think he wants 100$ for it but i gatta ask again to make sure

Re: Possibly going to be trying out the '91/'92 high rise spoiler mod

I just got back from picking this up, it needs a little body work but nothing major. I didn't find any cracks or broken pieces on it, so a little filling and primer and it should be ready to go. I couldn't pass it up for the nice round price of... FREE

*Actually I traded two 4th gen Firebird wheels with tires for it, but I got those for free too, so in a sense it WAS a free spoiler*

I guess that "new epoxy" GM was trying out on the spoiler didn't pass the long term test. Mine came off too, just like that.

Interested in seeing how this goes on and looks. Mine looks ghetto right now and it needs fixed.

No, but both of us were really suprised with how close it was. The first race we took off on the 3rd honk, nobody got a jump on the other one, and from 3rd through 4th gears, he maybe got a car and a half on me, which is pretty impressive considering the difference in cubic inches between the two. He's got a 408 and I have a 364. His made 535rwhp and mine made 420rwhp. There's major difference in weight between the two cars though. His is a heavy pig, mine's not so much.

Oh and I'm gonna start working on the spoiler in the next couple of weeks. My wife and I are finishing our move into the new house today, we're hoping to be able to start sleeping here tonight. And once we're in, I'm moving the Z28 from my parents' garage over here since I'll have a nice big 2 car garage to work from.

Nice picture.

What do the Camaro fender caps look like up close? I know at least on the birds they flare out A LOT and that spoiler wouldn't even come close to lining up.

I bet it could look pretty cool trimmed up to fit though. I'm looking forward to seeing it mocked up.

I guess you don't see it like I do. It goes along with that sayin' if you're not breaking crap you're not going fast enough. With the old motor, I wouldn't have been in that situation racing that SS, because it would e taken me 3x longer to get to 110-120mph haha

Ian, the side caps don't hang over very far off the edge of the quarters. I'll have it mocked up in a few weeks hopefully. We just moved in yesterday but I don't have the garage cleared out enough to park the Z there yet.

I wonder what a buck ten is like with the top down... I've hit 116 in my 91 TA vert with an LB9 with the top up though. Oh and I wanna see how this mod turns out.

Re: Possibly going to be trying out the '91/'92 high rise spoiler mod

Same exact thing happened to me, I was doing about 100 with the top down () and all the sudden I look in the mirror and see no spoiler. I drove back and forth looking for it on the side of the road, thinking it was in pieces, but never found it, then I noticed a flash in the mirror, got out and found it was barely hanging on by some tape, undamaged. I've been cruising around with mini batmobile ears ever since, but I have worked on fixing the spoiler. I had to fabricate new mounting bolts because the spoiler never had any to start with!

Re: Possibly going to be trying out the '91/'92 high rise spoiler mod

let me dig up some pics. I did it to one of my old verts. Still have the side caps off it. I shaved em down then filled em with evercoat body filler. and fiberglassed em.

Minni tubbing and wing.

I have more on a external hd I have to dig out.

search tgo there are a few others who have done it also.

Heres another way to do it also....

Re: Possibly going to be trying out the '91/'92 high rise spoiler mod

the very last picture where the high rise spoiler is cut and molded to the stock side spoilers looks hot!!!! but looks like way to much work i was looking at my spoiler today and was thinking that same exact thing and couldnt thing of an easy way to get it to mold to the side spoilers and have a perfect fit without a ton of work

Re: Possibly going to be trying out the '91/'92 high rise spoiler mod

The side "wings" with the highrise in the middle makes it look like it is stillmissing something in the middle... I'm not a fam off the hi-rise at all though, so I guess that's why I don't like it on the verts either...

Has anyone ever tried the 5" soiler and make it fit?

Now that actually looks really good. Although it might still look better without the upcurve at the end.

Just throwing in my $.02 but I'd honestly keep the stock one, modified of course, so that it doesn't come off again.

The more I see the 'vert tail ends, the more they grow on me. As big of a fan of the high rise as I am, I still think I'd prefer to stocker on a vert.

Re: Possibly going to be trying out the '91/'92 high rise spoiler mod

I still haven't really "worked" on it yet, but I was out in the garage today cleaning and moving my tools in, since my wife and I moved into a new house last month.

I set the spoiler up on the back of the car, it doesn't look like it would be TOO terribly difficult to just trim the end pieces of the spoiler and not have to touch the caps on the quarter panels. I think it's going to look really slick when it's done and painted.

Also, on a side note....while I was cleaning the garage and moving in my tools, I found this awesome little treasure! I'm really excited, because a friend of mine's dad does house rehabs for a living and is giving me a free heater, and I'll get a thermostat for it and will have a nice heated garage!

Re: Possibly going to be trying out the '91/'92 high rise spoiler mod

thought id share these. guy who works at a lot of the same places i do ownes this Z. its in bad shape with tons of miles on it, bunch of bad body work but it does catch your eye when it goes by. he hept the Z spoiler flat to the bottom and shaved the convertible part to make a smooth line between the 2. I know he didnt do it himself, but the person who did do it had the right idea. I can get more pics if you need a better look, i see the car 2 or 3 times a week.

Re: Possibly going to be trying out the '91/'92 high rise spoiler mod

Well I know two things will make it look better by the time it's done.. In the picture, the spoiler is leaning forward a few degrees, because it hasn't been trimmed. It won't be leaning when it's done. And also, it won't sit quite that high because I will trim down the sides so the middle sections sit flat on the trunk lid. I do plan on eventually balancing it out with an SS spoiler though!

Re: Possibly going to be trying out the '91/'92 high rise spoiler mod

A good friend of mine from Kansas came in town this weekend and was helping me get started on this project. We got a lot of progress done in just a few hours. I think I'm to the point that I can probably finish the rest by myself, but it will probably take me a couple weeks just working off and on in my spare time.

Here's some progress pictures in chronological order

And as it sits right now it has the expandable foam inside the ends of it drying over night. I'll be able to sand it down and fiberglass over the openings later.

so far it looks good, i was thinking about doing the high rise myself but I came across this spoiler, this thing works great for down force, and i really love how it has matches the ground effects.

Yea you can take them off. I didn't, but there's more than one way to skin a cat.

I have to say I haven't touched the car since those last pictures were taken. It's been too cold and I don't have my furnace hooked up yet. I'll knock it out once it gets warmer outside though.

He's talkin about the little side vents on the front spoiler and in front of the rear wheels. I don't like it either.
