Just picked a '90 IROC Convertible and it has the typical issue with the studs on the trunk spoiler broken. All 4 of them are broken, one missing, one damaged beyond any repair, so with that and a small chip out of the side of it, guess I am looking for a replacement.

Question I have is this looks different than the stock rear bubble window trunk lid spoiler.

Is it different than the stock trunk lid spoiler?

I fixed my spoiler yesterday. I got some plastic drain line which was 1 inch white PVC that we use installing Air condensor drain lines in homes. I cut four of them and ground them to have the same angle as the plastic pedastals have and also the same height as the pedastals. I took my factory pedastals and a hand held grinder with a cutting wheel and I cut small slits in the side of them all around so the epoxy would have several spots to grab it. I superglued the White drain pipe to the rear spoiler and then filled that with epoxy and installed the factory pedastals. I put them in with same factory angle. I let it set over night and I pulled on it very hard this morning and I could not budge it. Another member did this only he used bolts instead of re-using the factory pedastals like I did. I used an entire epoxy kit where it has two tubes of stuff you mix together. I just filled each pipe section full and stirred it with a cut off Q-tip and put in the pedastal and let it sit over night.

I have been looking for some hard plastic to do pretty much like you did, issue I have is that I only have two of the original spoiler mounting tabs, so I have to make two.

I'll let you guys know how it goes and post some pictures when I am done.

Go to the hardware store and get two bolts the appropriate length and same thread as the original studs. Get a washer or two for each of them that will just barely fit in the plastic pipe and a nut to hold the washers in place then epoxy the HELL out of them. I took a grinder and ground little slits in the base of my plastic factory studs so the epoxy would grab a lot better. I also ground the bottom of the spoiler so it would grab there as well. I have pulled extremely hard on mine trying to pull it free and I cannot budge it. The washer should hold your hardware bought studs very well. Send us pictures.

i gave up on my rear spoiler and when i pulled it off i noticed the previous owner had put screws on the front and back side of the spoiler to which i had to fill each hole...blah about 10 freakin screw holes..plus the big ones but im putting a stock 84 wing (not spoiler) on it and have already drilled the holes out and it looks good. will post pics when i get my camera fixed.

Apparently when I had my trunk repainted a few years back, the painter decided to use adhesive to hold the spoiler to the trunk instead of replacing the broken mounting pedestals with bolts or something similar. It eventually came all the way off when I was on a cruise. I ended up doing something more "custom"...

I went to US plastics online in Ohio, I ordered 1 foot of solid 5/8 plastic dowel, cut on the same angle and length. I used 3M panel bond to put them into the original spots, put a pilot hole in each one and put the screws into these to secure the spoiler. The dowel and shipping was $7, and I had it in 5 days.

Had that problem before. I endued up using stainless bolts and 3m panel bonding them to the spoiler. Sold it and was doing a 92 spoiler with extra end caps cut. Think Im gonna sell those and spoiler and get the hawks 5inch and see how that looks on a vert.

All right Guys, here is what I ended up doing. I finally came up with some material (old piece of Trex decking from when I built my deck) to use as the new stud material.

So here is the way I repaired my stock spoiler:

1. Took the Trex decking, short piece left over and cut four 1.5" "new studs" with hole saw.
2. Took these and got angle from one of the original studs, then cut them with band saw.
3. Got four 1/4"x1" stove bolt head bolts, camfered out the angled side of the new studs so that the stove bolts would sit flush.
4. Prepared the bottom side of the spoiler.
5. Glued the new studs with stove bolts onto the spoiler.

I have attached three pic's to this posting of the above and will add three more to a second posting right after this.

Did this all yesterday, letting the glue dry overnight. Still need to cut some 1.5" pieces of tire tube as sealer to go in between the studs and the deck lid. Will bolt it on and take some pic's of the final result.

Not too bad, a few hours work and some materials laying around the house saved me $280.
