1992 camaro rs convertible restoration questions

Ok so I have a 1992 rs convertible v6 that I'm trying to restore to decent looking conditions this is a list of things that I want to put in the car and I was wondering if anyone can give me an estimate of how much money these things would cost me

1. New stayfast glass window top
2. New exhaust either flowmaster or maganaflow
3.18 inch irocs
4. Put a 350 engine on it
5 black seats from a 4th camaro and a new carpet.
6. A z28 hood and grill.
7. A new front spoiler
8. New clear side markers and bumper lights
9. New paint job.
And that's it for now any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Re: 1992 camaro rs convertible restoration questions

What you're describing sounds more like a custom project than a true restoration. Your best bet is to look at the various sub-forums that pertain to each modification you wish to perform.

1. Convertibles
2. Exhaust
3. Wheels and tires
4. Engine swap
5. Interior
6, 7, 8, & 9. Body and/or Detailing and Appearance

Just by doing a rough count in my head, I'd say you're looking at about $15,000 in modifications and repairs, if you just take it somewhere and write a check. You'd be further ahead to sell it and just go buy a V8 convertible to begin with, since the engine swap will be the most expensive part of your plan after a paint job. Virtually everything in front of the driveshaft is different on a V8 car from a V6, piecing a V8 setup together will end up costing you a small fortune and doing it right will either take a V8 parts car, or several months of searching the classifieds. Much easier just to spend the money up front and have a real V8 car.

Re: 1992 camaro rs convertible restoration questions

why put a 350 in it? you can get a LQ4 for a similar price... or if you look hard enough a LY6 can be built into an LS3 for less then $1500. I'm not saying you have to take my advice but Drew is right...

I have a 89 camaro RS that has all of the following new parts
Iroc hood - $350
bumper cover - $450 (GM dead stock, had to call a lot of places to find)
fenders - $80/pair (convertible fenders are hand made so ttop fenders will have to be modified to fit)
front end bolt kit - $60
Convertible top - $550 w/ glass
Convertible weatherstrip kit - $550
EZ body harness - $200
Clear headlights/marker - $100

I saved a LOT of money by doing nearly all the work myself. but to have a pro put the top on the car is $700+ price of top and new weatherstrip. Like I said, verts have hand made fenders $400+....

$15000 to restore the car is a fair price from a shop, but you can have a nicer car for cheaper if you do it yourself.

I had to learn to paint, sand and weld a bit... but, for less then 7k I have all the above and more + LS1 and T56...

verts cost a bit more then hardtops to restore and convertible specific parts are hard to find (like I said, it's nearly all hand made). find out what you do and dont need.

The mounting point between door and the front wheel at the bottom of the fender is totally different.

Re: 1992 camaro rs convertible restoration questions

i can say this just keep the v6 in it for now until you can get enough money to get a small v8 thats what im doing right now plus the v6 cars may not have alot of power but they are still a little more hard to find but anywho i can say this just in the front end suspension, top, radio, tires, rear end redone, and alot more stuff i know im forgetting me and my dad have already put around 7 to 8K in mine and it still needs a paint job and some more motor work done to it. as for the top id stay with the plastic window myself because the glass windows are a little more harder to put down and cost ALOT more
hope this helps a little
ohh almost forgot and exhuast work to. really it soundslike we got the same car dude same stuff all around it looks like

Need to cut about 4 inches off the bottom by the door. save the bracket and install on the new fender. Compare to your old fender. Not a big deal. Bought my fenders from JC Whitney about $40 each. Course, no shipping since they are just down the street from me..
