The more I read the board, the more I worry. Last year I bought a 91 Z28 Vert with a 305 and T5. Well the engine took a crap, and I replaced it with a basic 350. I have a 650 carb and no other power adders. Do I have to worry about frame twist, or cracked windshield, if I decide to jump on the pedal? I haven't had any issues so far, but the car has been out of service for a while( for one reason or another). Should I look in to SFCs? What should I worry about?

no matter what engine you have, sfc's are a must for any f-body, especially the verts. As for twisting it, when the frame is connected i dont think you will have an issue with a mild 350

this is what i have.i bolted them in and then had them welded.my cars stock except for the rear gear ratio.these and the front strut brace helped alot.

The carb swap worries me more than flexible chassis but subframes are a must have.
The car won't fall apart without them, unless its rusty.

They are a must.. These cars are flimsy! The body flexes more than the suspension.

If you are crafty I would suggest making a set, square/rectangular/round tubing...anything helps. Tie it to the front bolt on the rear LCA's. Somehow triangulate it over to the trans rails. Connecting it underneath the car with an overly beefy driveshaft loop.

My set were from Soutside Machine and are no longer produced but they do tie into the lca bolt. They are a rectangular tube design. Roughly 1.5"x2.5". My cage is welded to them through the floor, making it pretty damn stout.


Many wheels up launches so far, no wrinkled quarter panels. front door gaps have grown maybe 1/8" but nothing too bad.

You'll be fine with having a convertible, just put a set of SFC's on it like others have mentioned.

What are the better sfc to get? I heard some of them had clearance issues. Are some better for single cats VS dual cats?

I used a set of BMR weld in SFC's. They fit great and didnt have any problems with install.

My vert still has the stock 305 and I cracked the windshield going around some corners by my house. I have done suspension mods with bilstein shocks, red bushings everywhere, panhard and all other bars. also added a 327 posi 9 bolt with pbrs but I can attest to the masssive flexing of these cars but they handle pretty well.

Energy suspension bushings? I wish I never put those in. Sure the steering and front end are tight but the damn squeaking!!!

I've had Alston SFC's on my car for about 13 years. I've been selling them for a little over ten years. You really had me scratching my head with that picture in the link. Then I read the thread that was connected to the picture. What you showed is Alston's SFC's for a second Gen F-body, not their thirdgen F-body SFC's.

Check the picture of the thirgen version from my web site.

The "S"shaped one is the passenger-side and tucks above the catalytic converter. This style of SFC allows you the option of drilling and installing them yourself or to just have them welded on. The bolt holes give an extra location to weld them to the underside of the body.

I hope this helps clear up any questions.

Take the bushings out and clean that lube off that they give you.
Then coat it all with anti-sieze.

I drilled a set of them years ago for a grease zirt. It took awhile to get all thier sticky crap out but when it finally got all out they quit making noise.

I have found teflon paste is amazing for removing poly bushing squeak.

Alston's all the sway!

The Sphn/BMR/Whatever others kinds don't even connect to the rear subframe. They come close & attach to the rear LCA mount & do a decent job because that area is fairly stiff, but they do not connect to the actual rear subframe.

it is a good Idea to get a subframe connectors because the body flex a lot and don't sound nice. that bean said I have a 89 GTA and beet the hell out of it and don't have any issues aside for the previus statement.
