R12 to R134 conversion

Whats a rough estimate on how much it cost me to have someone convert the system for me or if its not hard for me to do it myself. In a 92 camaro rs 305 TBI

Axle/Gears: Limited Slip 3.23's
I suggest you do a search before you proceed. Other members have converted successfully; I wasn't one of them. As a matter of fact, I went from 12 to 134 back to 12. Baby cools even on the hottest days. If I had to do it over again, I'd stay with the 12.

You could do it yourself, but I paid bout 80 bucks at the shop to have it done.

just curious, how much did you pay for a can or R12? I would love to go back to that stuff, it worked better than 134 could ever dream of. it's just so hard to find...and so expensive.
a mechanic friend of mine said he stopped doing it because 12 was costing $120 a can.

IIRC, I paid $180 for 3 cans. The stuff can be bought from such places as CarQuest. There was no problem in finding and purchasing.

I would love to go back to R12. How can I?

The conversion for me cost almost $1000. Due to needing a new compressor. I guess compressors don't like to sit on garage shelfs for months and dry-rot and not hold pressure worth a crap.

Compressors! Oh boy! When I first bought my car, the compressor was dead, so I decided that the time was appropriate to convert to 134. In spite of my mechanic's best abilities, and he's a man in whom I have faith, he could never really coax the system into cooling decently. On a 90-degree day, I wasn't sweating, but I certainly wasn't cool. Eventually the compressor died (perhaps because of the conversion itself), so I determined to switch back to 12. The first compressor, a reman, screamed and groaned like a goblin from hell from the outset. It was replaced. The second remain copied the first. Finally a brand new GM unit was installed and my agonies were put to bed. The air blows very cold even on the hottest days--a new blower motor also helped in that regard. You shouldn't be surprised at how much faster a new motor will blow--after all the old one is 20 years old or so.

I hadnt even thought of a new blower motor. I didnt know you could change them out, either. im gonna go invest in one of those and see if that helps my cooling woes. BTW, is there any particular reason my blower only works on HI?

Probably a fried resistor or relay. Five minute fix. Check the following link for a pic (you can also see a pic of the blow motor):
