help with cooling fan issue

First, i'm very new here and to my car. Have an 86 berlinetta, 305, single fan. I've went through post after past and looked my car over. Pulled code 15 and 41 from it. My car overheated, the fan was not kicking on, but comes on when the ac is turned on. Found a broken green wire on the passenger side beside the motor, and near it a broken black wire going to what i assume is the coolant fan switch. I am thinking that the green wire is supposed to go to it from looking at chilton diagram, just not sure if it was spliced together after replaced, with what i think is the switch, which is i believe between the back to spark plugs on passenger side. All i do know for sure that is good right now is the fuse for the fan, not saying much. To sum it up, the overheating and at least code 15 related to this switch?
Someone please help!

Your right about the green wire...... it appears to be the one for the cooling temp switch for The fan. If that wire is not connected than the fan relay will never receive the signal and will not turn the fan on. Splice that wire back onto the plug and you should be OK. The fact that the AC switch is turning the Fan on means the Relay and Fan are working fine.

Code 15 refers to the ECM coolant temp switch located in the thermostat housing. It should have a black and a yellow wire going to it. This code was driving me nuts during my most recent project....... First I found the wires were previously "crimped" and had to splice them - the code was still showing. Once I replaced the sensor the code disappeared for good !!!

Code 41 means that your cars ECM is not seeing a signal from your Distributor. Be sure that the 4 wire connector at the distributor is plugged in correctly....... Disconnect and re-connect it several times to ensure a good connection between the plugs. Also check the Distributor to CAP plug to be sure that one is OK too !

My Best advise is to use the AC / Heater switch for turning on the FAN as soon as you get in the car. Better to run it cold until there is a repair rather than letting it overheat ! Until you can repair the coolant temp fan switch use that switch to manually activate the fan & avoid overheating it again !!
