88 iroc auto trans
88 iroc auto trans
I have been working on this 88 iroc that I got real cheap because it had issues.
It is a stock 305 with a auto trans.
The cooling fans didn't work so it ran hot, It had a cracked flexplate, And the back brake lines were rusted out.
First I fixed the main cooling fan by replacing the motor, I replaced the flexplate with a new one and when I filled the trans I put in the 10 pints the book called for but it wouldn't register on the stick. I ended up putting in two gallons just to get to the full mark on the stick. Now I am questioning that thought process because I have a big puddle of trans fluid on my floor. I am thinking the guy that had it before me put in the wrong dipstick???
How much fluid is needed for a 700r4 trans???
I did replace the dipstick tube seal when I had the trans out. I can't really tell where the fluid is coming from. Please help and Thanks Dave

Re: 88 iroc auto trans
In general, the fluid capacity of a 700R4 is about 5 quarts with a pan drop and filter change. Total capacity is about 11.5 quarts.
If you left the converter in place - I don't see why you would need to remove it from the transmission for a flex plate change, I would say it's now over-filled.

10 pints (5 qts) is correct. Different cars, depending on the angle they sit at, vary a bit; but never more than a qt or so.
I'd say yours is (was?) overfilled at this point.
Might want to drop the pan, let it drip overnight, put the pan back on, put 4½ qts in; and mark your dipstick at that point. DO NOT do this by scribing a mark across it; look up how to cut glass (if you don't already know how) to see why. Instead, drill a small hole, like 3/64" (.050" more or less) or so. Then add another qt and drill another hole, there's your empty <-> full range.
