Overheating mystery. Resovoir tank over flowing?

hi, I've got a problem with my trans am overheating. The GTA with 80k miles started overheating during a couple freeway trips. There was a small leak from the intake manifold so I got the gaskets replaced, but things still were not well. Basically what would happen, is that after driving the car for a good distance on the freeway and then slowling down, the temp would quickly rise until the car was completely overheating. The first obvious thing to check was the fans. Those were completely fine, they came on when they needed to. The strange thing i noticed was that the coolant resovoir tank would bubble to the top and overflow when the temp went up on the gauge. So next, I had the radiator checked, but the flow through it was fine. Lastly we threw in a new thermostat. But still the car overheats. All I can think to do next is to put in a new water pump. But, there are no leaks anywhere; coolant nor water. All the hoses seem fine.

The engine was running for awhile while overheating because I did get stuck in traffic on the bridge one night, so I hope it didn't take too much damage. Anyway, any idea what else I could check? Any ideas what can be causing this thing to overheat?

Thaks a lot

just cause the pump isnt leaking does not mean it is not bad. I have seen raiator fluid break down and basically turn into acid and totally eat the blades in the water pump so that the pump wouldnt pump any fluid. So i would recomend taking the pump off and possibly replacing it. While replacing the pump i would also replace the fluid.

If i were you i would try changing the thermostat, cause i have a 1986 i-roc and it was doin the same thing. it was overheating and the overflow tank was boiling. i changed the thermostat and the problem was fixed. give that a shot before you spend alot of money... Good luck

Re: Overheating mystery. Resovoir tank over flowing?

SO we think we have found the problem.
I didn't mention this, but the car was also having some power issues, and one of the spark plugs kept burning out. I also noticed a weird smell in my coolant a while back, but since they changed out all the fluids I didn't notice it recently.
Well, they found a cracked head and the believe the gas fumes to be mixing in with the coolant. I guess this is what is causing the timing and the spark plug to blow out as well as affecting the flow of the coolant. So, the head is being rebuilt now and I'm hoping that will fix all the madness
