berlinetta HVAC controls

I'm having some issues with heater controls on a 1986 Berlinetta camaro, the controls don't operate at all. I've checked all the fuses, wiring, and components. I haven't been able to track down the problem. The blower motor does work in all speeds if you manually apply power to the correct corresponding wires. about the only thing that does work is the wiper controls and the illumination of the complete unit. The LED's for the speed selection, and or vent selections don't light up either. I have tried another control unit in which I purchased from Ebay, with the same results. The car has been sitting for a long time, with only 24,000 original documented miles. I have already removed the speedo cluster and had that serviced because it was reading erractically (problem is solved with the cluster). I'm really trying to get this operating correctly, but I believe that the controls themselves maybe bad. I have heard that they were known to go bad frequently. Any advice or repair tips would be greatly appreciated.

Sometimes the foil buttons wear out and it's a simple matter of fixing it. I added a bit of solder to the center contact but you might be able to loosen and raise the center up a bit as well. You would need to allow enough room for the foil button to click while still having good contact when the button is pressed. A meter with an audible continuity checker will tell you that the buttons are working, so you can check that before hand. With that low of miles on the car I would think that they would still be in good shape

Be careful though since the posts on the body where the screws attach sometimes fall apart when you try to disassemble it. The brittle plastic simply sticks to the screw threads.

It’s as simple as de-soldering one of the foil legs and adding a little solder to the center.

When you have it apart you could also check and/or replace the LEDs. The little blue caps on the LEDs need to be swapped over or it will look yellow.
