Hello all, so here is my question. I have a single electric fan set up in my 84 camaro. I had to buy an aftermarket fan controller so I purchased a Derale fan controller and it has worked very well so far. At this point I have the fan controller set to have the fan come on when the temperature hits 160. The temperature has never gone beyond 180 but the fan never shuts off....once the engine is warmed up the fan stays on until you shut the ignition off. Should I have the fan set to come on before 160? Also wondering is it normal for the single fan to be going all the time?? I have been thinking about switching to a dual fan set up for awhile, but I am definitely looking for some guidance. Does the dual fan set up run non stop too?? or does it cool the engine enough that the fans shut off periodically??

It is normal for a factory fan to come on at a much higher temperature. A ECM controlled fan will turn on at 220*F. A fan switch controlled fan turns on at 238*°F.

Having the fan turn on before the thermostat is even open is usless.
Having it set below the thermostat temperature will obviously make the fan run constant as the controller can never reach its turn off temperature (usually a 10-15° lower turn-off temp then what turn-on is set for).
If you have a 160° thermostat, and the fan controller is set to 160°, the controller can never get the coolant temp down to the point it will shut the fan off.

Thanks for your help. I am pretty sure the thermostat I have in there is a 180 degree. So would it be a better idea to adjust the fan controller so the fan comes on when the engine temp hits 180-185? Does anyone out there who is running a single fan set up have the same issue? or am I the only one with a single fan that wont shut off?

I'm running a 180 stat, I have fan set to come on at about 195.

If you want the fan to cycle, you should set it at a minimum of +15° above the thermostat opening temperature.
