3 row radiator spaceing question

I need to beef up my cooling system in my 1990 IROCZ, my question is... If I was to buy a 3 row radiator (such as the "Champion" one on eBay) is there still enough room to run the AC condenser and a dual electric fan setup. Is there enough clearance room to have all this? Right now everything is stock. Is a 3 row core radiator bigger than stock? I'm assuming yes.

Re: 3 row radiator spaceing question

this is a gread radiator to choose, it is a bit thicker yes. I am not sure about still running the a/c condensor, I have no a/c on my 87 anymore. the stock dual fan setup still fits on my applicaton. you can get the add-on fans from champion with a shroud, i would think you could still run a condensor. I just took a quick look, and I had to cut the stock rubber isolators to mount my rad. So you could have to probably make up some custom mounts for the condensor, there looks to be plenty of room in front of the rad still.

Re: 3 row radiator spaceing question

I have a be cool which is two rows of one inch tubes and everything fits great. If you can, try and find a radiator with rows that are one inch wide as these are supposed to cool better than the old style half inch wide tubes. They say they are more effeciant and my be cool cools much better than the 3 row I replaced it with. The be cools are expensive and I bought a used one for $230.00 and it fits better than any aftermarket I have used. Afco, fluidyne, and others make the two row one inch rads and they come up for sale very cheap. I had a griffin and it did not fit very well at all. It cooled good though.

Personally, I wouldn't touch the Champion radiator. The one I have doesn't cool very well and based on the one a friend cut up, the build quality is pretty poor. Try to find one from Be Cool, Afco, Ron Davis, Griffin. Anything but the Champion. All of them will allow you to retain the AC and fans and will drop in with some trimming of the rubber stops on the frame rail. Just remember to keep some amount of rubber between the radiator and the chassis.

Re: 3 row radiator spaceing question

Ok I was thinking about this... My Camaro is completely stock. 1990 IROC 305 TPI, standard transmission, all original equipment. GM put that radiator in there because it worked. Soppose I bought only a dual electric fan set up (12" from Jegs). Flush my radiator well and with 12" dual fan setup from Jegs, switch out the thermostat, change the fan switch to something like 200* on 185* off, something around that nature. Think the car would handle 100* plus weather?

Re: 3 row radiator spaceing question

I survive fine in Houston with the stock radiator and stock dual fans. 180° thermostat and 200/185 fan switch are my only changes. But I also don't have a 383 with gigantic heads/cam.

For an aftermarket radiator and fans that fits and outperforms the stock setup, I'd go for the sticky thread by Justin89Formy.

So you have a 383 stroker and running stock radiator and stock fans, and a different setup for fan switch and thermostat. And your car handles Houston weather?
