When is the EVAP canister controlled

Hey guys. When does the ECM tell the EVAP solenoid to open up and let the fuel vapors into the engine? Is it start-up, or low RPM cruising, or acceleration? And when does it close it. I'm curious because I want to eventually swap to Megasquirt, but I'm going to try and have the EVAP canister controlled by it.
