CODE 44

my car has been giving me problems with the engine. so i did a code check on it and i found a code 44: lean exhaust in the Haynes Repair Manual.

Code 44 says,
Lean condition caused by malfunctioning carburetor/ fuel injector, vacuum leak, low fuel pressure, etc.; poor electrical connection, open or short in circuit; defectiv MAP sensor; Defectric oxygen sensor; defectric ECM.

has anyone else has this code before?
i check the vacuum leak and found nothing.
i replaced the MAP sensor. it semi fixed it, where is the oxygen sensor and how do you test it if its good or bad? im running a 1990 RS, 305 TPI engine.
oh also how do you tell if you got a bad fuel injector?
----------
oh i forgot to tell you what problem im having.
it spudders when trying to accelerate. like its not getting enough gas. seems like its miss fireing kind of thing happening.
you know when you try to accelerate with to high of a gear and it just spudders. lets say your in 4th gear when you should be in 2nd? that kind of thing. accerating is horible until you get to about 3500 rpm and up. it starts going pretty good.
after replacing the map sensor it fixed it abit. its not as bad but it still runs terrible

Re: CODE 44

Sounds like a bad fuel pump or clogged fuel filter. That will ause both the code 44 along with the driveability issues you are experiencing.

Check the fuel pressure at the rail, TPI with the vac line off should be around 43.5 psi. May need to check this under load.

No problem, athough it still sounds like a fuel pressure issue. The TBI's are 9 - 13 psi for service specs. Unfortunately, there isn't a port to measure the pressure. Need to open a line and put an adaptor in place. Easiest is at the frame to engine lines under the hood. The larger diameter line is the one to check.

Re: CODE 44

still have this problem? try this out. " possible air solenoid stuck in upstream position blowing air in ahead of 02. With engine running & fully warm, pinch off hose from air pump to exhaust manifold. Scan 02 volts & integrators for change." MY friend had similar problem like u and was sending out a code 44. he disconnected the hose and the problem went away

nevermind this is an old post.
