datamaster & vista??

Got a situation that i would like to brainstorm with you.

When I was tuning the Z, YEARS ago, I had an old laptop with a standard serial port that my serial cable plugged into no problem.

Now, I have this new HP (which I hate by the way) and I am trying to scan the car and can not.

Firstly, the old cable does not plug into this computer anywhere. So, I went out looking for some sort of adapter and at radio shack the guy sold me a "USB-A to Serial Cable". So, my old serial cable plugs into the serial end of the "adapter" I just bought and the USB end goes to the computer .....great...except for I'm not getting any data to appear.

Footnotes: I have to run Datamaster as an "admin' for it to even open without an error (again, I hate Vista) and when I hit "record ALDL data" it shows as recording, but no data is appearing in the boxes.
I installed this USB to serial cable "adapter" according to instructions (had to use an included software CD which surprised me)

I figured this should be an easy adapter issue and move on with life, but apparently not.

So my courses of action/thoguhts

1. Maybe its the car (ALDL), but i doubt it b/c my scan tools work.
2. Maybe its Vista (would not surprise me at all)
3. Maybe the new cable/adapter i bought isn't for this kind of thing

Any ideas??

Is there just a simple out/in adapter i can buy rather than this whole cable assembly I bought? i'm sure its out there.

Thanks

Re: datamaster & vista??

what i have learned, depending on updates that you have in vista various drivers should be applied, here is a list of links to divers that You should try (remember that every time You want to install new driver, ypu should remove old one completly)
http://support.radioshack.com/Downlo...e/260-0183.exe
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm
http://www.radioshack.com/graphics/u...ad/2600949.exe
if these wont work, let me know i'll try to search more

best regards

Re: datamaster & vista??

My radio shack adapterserial to USB worked just fine. I did however give up on vista and went to XP on my new lappy.
