383 Fuel Injection Selection... HELP

Im building a 383 stroker in a 98 roller block, im using a SCAT forged steel rotating assembly with dished pistions and shooting for an overall compression ratio around 9.5, im using dart iron eagle 200cc heads with 72 cc ports, the overall horsepower im shooting for is around 450-500, before nitrous. Im going to be putting this in a third gen camaro with a 5 speed manual(soon to be 6 speed), My question is what aftermarket fuel injection system should i be looking at? Ive been looking at the Holley Commander 950 MPFI System, GM Performance Ram Jet Vortec Fuel Injection System, Holley Stealth Ram MPFI System, or an Affordablefuelinjection.com Small Block MPFI System with a 1000 cfm 4bbl Billet Aluminum Throttle Body. Im wondering if anyone has any ideas or preference over these systems or other system that can similarly perform. Im trying to run a street/strip combo with 500 on the street and add nitrous at the track for about 700hp. I want fuel injection for more precise tuning of the engine, fuel economy, and ease of use. I just need advice as to which system to use. I kind of like the affordable fuel injecion systems because they include an ecm, and a distrubitor. But i need some direction before i spring for any of these systems. Thanks in advance for all the help.

Re: 383 Fuel Injection Selection... HELP

stealth ram is nice for the price and can be used with GM electronics, TPI system stuff.

I dont know too much on the holley commander stuff but its very easy to get the car running good with GM TPI Mass air flow systems, i'd use the 89 TPI 350 code and tune with that. Thats how i ran my 383 last year which was near 500 on motor and 650 on spray.

For 200 shot or more, i'd look into direct port nitrous system on the stealth ram or go with a singleplane MPFI type intake and do a plate fogger. HSR does have abit of a air distribution issue...as do most front feed plenum intakes like miniram/LT1/ram jet etc. It aint a horrible issue but is one you may want to keep an eye on with nitrous nozzle/plate kits feeding the front of the plenum.

RamJet will only work with vortec heads so you'd have to change them out for something like the fastburn stuff..as regular vortec cast iron heads dont perform as well.

you could look into a hybrid system like victor E EFI setup and add TPI electronics and either go with the MPFI 1000-1200 cfm throttlebody or do an intake elbow and use LS1 type throttlebody. Alittle bit more involved but it works. Thats what I'm running now, is single plane victor EFI and LS1 throttlebody on 91-92 TPI ecm

Re: 383 Fuel Injection Selection... HELP

I think the more i look around the more i like the Holley Stealth Ram setup, it seems to be a bit more user friendly and upgradable. I also like the fact that the ECM is included and fully programable, next question is what size injectors? I saw that the 30lb's are rated up to like 450ish, the 36's up to like 550ish, and the 42's up to like 700, seeing as i am planning on later down the road running nitrous up to like a 125 or 150 lb shot im wondering if i can get away with the 36's or should i just go all the way with 42's? Im fairly positive this system will work with the heads and everything else, but please tell me if im going to need to make and changes or special considerations to run this system... also, should i be concerned running this with a stock iroc-z style hood? Im trying to avoid having to upgrade that as well after the money this system is gonna set me back...

Re: 383 Fuel Injection Selection... HELP

i run 383 HSR and i went with MegaSquirt + TPI adapter board -that does the job, this is cheepest standalone FI system and it is very user friendly, if You know any thing about engine electronics + you'll get some WB 02 then tuning will be as simple as it can be

best regards

Re: 383 Fuel Injection Selection... HELP

I am not to familiar with the commander 950 system from holley but i have heard it is user friendly with alot of preprogrammed files you can try. I think it comes with everything you need but you'll have to look into that. As far as sensors and stuff goes, that you will need to ask about.

36's should be fine for your goals on motor. When you spray you probably will want to go with a wet shot so injector size doesnt matter.

Re: 383 Fuel Injection Selection... HELP

if you are on a budget, shop around for a used
FAST Classic system with a wide band 02. it will be better, cheaper and easier to program than the factory stuff. the comander is a nice system but it does not come with a wide band controler built in so it takes another box . iron vortec heads are pretty good, but they are not a full tilt boogie performance head. they dont have the same intake bolt pattern that a standard sbc uses so once you buy that ramjet intake, its only going to fit a select few heads. (Vortec iron and GM Fast burn heads for the most part) I have a Ramjet project on the motor stand right now, I like them but just making you aware of the limitations

Re: 383 Fuel Injection Selection... HELP

I just used the Accel intake on my 406, and had a chip burned. Ofcourse that was before all this other stuff came out. I agree with the above that 36# injectors will be fine. You could probably even get away with 30's. I'd go 36 just to be safe.
