Would anyone happen to know if there is a flash programmer out there for a 1989 trans am, 305, tpi, auto? I was looking into chips and got told a flash programmer would be much better for gas mileage/power/ etc
any help or ideas would be much appreciated!

Third gens use PROM chips. Flash reprogramable PCM's started in about 1995.

No, you can also custom burn a PROM chip that will give you more variables. There are guys on this site that cab do it.

no worries! now as for this flash programmer, im going to hopefully assume it comes with simple instructions for a noob such as myself? mostly i just want to be able to use my car for work and play! i just want to switch it bw economy and power, would a chip possibly be cheaper and easier than a flash?

Going the tune by chip route would be cheaper, possibly take longer, depending on how much you change. Both can have the same results in the end.

You can also buy EPROM emulators that take the place of the EPROM, and allow tuning while the engine is running, which the bin can then be programmed to an EPROM once you have the tune you want.

so your saying i could get a chip, and program it so i get better gas mileage AND power, and not have to "tune as i go" basically?

The best way to overcome ignorance is with in-depth study & hands-on experience.

I suggest you study, in depth, the tuning stickys posted on this forum.

Thanks again guys for the help! ill look over some stickys here :P one more thing, can i buy pre-programmed chips? or is there somewhere i can download the bin files? not too sure about doing the tuning myself :/

Go back to dynamicefi.com and read intro to tuning part 1 and part 2. If you are a beginner that is your best choice. If you car is stock you may in fact benefit from a so called performance chip as it may meet your needs. tpichips.com. I will guess they just lean out WOT and add some SA at WOT
