Megasquirt and T56 Reverse Lockout

If you run a MS3 I'm pretty sure you can ignore this as I believe MS3 can use a VSS signal to trigger outputs. This is primarily for MS2

I recently had an idea to deal with the reverse lockout issue with the T56. Some buy the Samaco box which makes it work like the factory and some use toggles, buttons, etc. I never wanted to do a toggle or button and don't really want to spend $100 on the Samaco box. So I came up with a plan to control it through the megasquirt

Basically you need to be running MS2 with MSEXTRA with the up to date code. I am currently running 3.3 Aplha 10. The reason is you need closed loop idle to be configured and working.

You then have to create a spare output circuit. Instructions for that can be found here:

I already had a spare port made as I made two when I installed the first one for my secondary fan. If you don't have a circuit made yet you can at least verify it will work for you by using the LED lights on the case as an indicator.

In the end you enable the spare port to trigger on "status2" = 0. What this does is as soon as the computer enters closed loop idle it will engage the output port which is wired to the reverse lockout solenoid. The beauty of it is if closed loop idle is configured properly it will never engage under normal driving conditions. As soon as you come to a stop it will enter closed loop idle and allow you to enter reverse without man handling it.

I haven't actually wired it up to the trans yet but have been testing it with a test light and it should work perfectly. I will update this when I actually do the final wiring as my relays and lockout pigtail should be here today.

Just wanted to post an update on this as I finally got it all wired up. I made up the spare circuit as shown in the link above. I decided to run it through a relay as I was not 100% sure how much draw the lockout solenoid uses. If you have an amp meter you could test it. I don't so I played it safe with a relay.

When I first hooked it up I had issues with it not triggering the output on initial startup. There was a delay of about 20 seconds even after it has entered closed loop idle. So the solution was to make the first trigger seconds > 20 AND status2 = 0. This makes reverse available for the first 20 seconds no matter what. By the end of the 20 seconds status2 has taken over and it works seamlessly.

Overall I am very happy with it. The only problem is I'm used to pushing through the spring so I find myself slamming it over to the reverse gate.

In an unrelated note...

Are you using a relay board? Im having issues with my MS2 setup, specifically no RPM signal. Would you be able to send some screen shots of your ignition settings in tunerstudio? Im just trying to eliminate problems. Everything was working until I swapped the ECU between cars. Also where do you pull the coil power from? Pink wire under the dash? Thanks.

I do not use a relay board. Everything is wired directly to the megasquirt through my own harness I made. As for ignition input I am using the HEI mod found on diyautotune. If I remember correctly is modifies the optoin circuit. I never had any luck using the VR style input. But below is a shot of my main ignition screen. And again I am running the latest beta 12. Pm me your email and I can send you my tune to look through if you want.

Thank you for posting that screenshot, it helped reaffirm the settings I had were correct. It turned out the fancy Street Fire distributor was not giving me any tach signal for the MS3. I swapped it out for the stock dizzy and fired right up. Good luck with your third gen.
