What ECM & PROM Number Should I have?

Help ECU Guys,

My 86 Tpi IROC Z 305 Auto is throwing Code 51 a lot.

I think my computer or prom is going bad because I am getting some strange idle problems when I fire up from cold even though the IAC and TPS sensor are set to spec as per Tech Area procedures. (Everthing appears normal once engine is hot)

I have looked at the numbers on the ECU casing and on the Plug in Prom and I am wondering if they are correct?

ECU Number - 16059461
Prom Number - 16055376

The RPO Code is NA5 and shows as being Federal Tier O

What are the signs for Limp Home Mode? What will the engine do or not do??

Any info gratefully received

Thanks in advance

Sounds like the PROM (or more correctly, the memcal) isn't seated properly in the ECM. I'd pull it out and re-install it, which is a 10-minute job at most. I think the ECM number is that from a newer replacement, not sure about the PROM. Fed Tier 0 is the base level of emissions, IIRC. In Limp Home Mode, the SES light will be on, the car will run very sluggishly and not want to rev, and the torque converter clutch (if you have an automatic) will not lock up. HTH...

Thanks for the info, have pulled the PROM and put it back and replaced it with an updated one but the problem persists. I think that it could be the ECM - Looks like I will have to bite the bullet and buy a new ECM. Thanks again.

Hi Guys,

Just a note to thank everyone who replied to my previous postings.

My problems were down to a bad ECM, a quick browse on eBay got me a used one for $42.00, works perfectly.

Thanks again.
