BURNED OUT PROM?? MEMCAL

IM getting my car all fixd up, the only thing holding me back is a bad prom...THE car runs crappy. and the SES light stays on. IT READS CODE 12.but nothing is wrong with the car.. MY MECHanic says swap the computer prom and memcal. i already swapped the computer 870. DO YOU THINK A BAD PROM WOULD CAUSE BAD IDLING AND ETC? Im getting it off amazon.com. and the memcal through a dealer in CALI. IT TOOK ME THREE WEEKS TO TRACK DOWN BOTH.

I cant answer your main question for sure, but I know that code 12 is like a default code that is supposed to be there, letting you know the codes are displaying. if it didnt show 12, and you didnt have error codes, you wouldnt be sure weather there are no codes or if something is broke and not showing them.
so code 12 is good.

Re: BURNED OUT PROM?? MEMCAL

yeah youre right, but i guess i got to wait and see, i hope its one of those, swapping proms, "bam its working again"..kinda of stories. But im ordering the chips tomorw. its 62 dollars for the prom and 39 dollars for the memcal. and then im going to readjust everything, from idle to tps. i got adjust the shift cable cause when i put it in park sometime it still rolls. i know how to adjust it and all. I love the 3rd gen so much..NOt so much the camaros unless they have the head lamp cover installed. i hate the eyes of the camaros. looks ... But the firebird doesnt look good until its slamd. BUT im 2 grand away from restoring the mutha- .

You don't have a "bad prom/memcal". Maybe "out-of-tune" IF you modified it, but if it is stock, then you have a mechanical problem AND your mechanic is incapable of fixing it.

Ask you mechanic how he deduced that you need a new computer? Is it because he put it on a scanner and saw problems or is it because he can't figure out why it is running poorly?

It scares me when a mechanic says "get a new ECM"...and proms rarely go bad. Is your mechanica a GM Dealer or just some guy in a garage?

PS: Your prom is inside your Memcal...so I have no idea why you are buying a prom??? Sounds to me that you are buying something that's not right.

Re: BURNED OUT PROM?? MEMCAL

I got two chips in the computer. one thats 01227741 (prom) and 16042430 (memcal) my computer is one of a kind for that year. THE mechanic, mexican, told me he couldnt get the scanner to talk to the computer. THE light is staying lit. I cant diagnose it myself either, im pretty good with cars, and even up to this point i think its the chip. Problem is, NO ONE CARRIES the damn prom. Im going to get a HYPERTECH street runner. but i have to wait 4 weeks. DUMBA$$ BACK ORDER AT SUMMIT RACING. Im really cheap, i hate TPIS.com. pricey just to program a little 5 cent chip. i've tuned the car, everything had been done to it. WOULD A BAD VOLTAGE REGULATOR IN THE ALTERNATOR BE CAUSING THIS? my volt meter in the dash, is not working. and everything is timed, new cap everything practical is new. i had to advance it more than 6 degrees BTDC to get it to run. Its starting to get old, falling off of bikes that is. I got to endure another month of it, unless i can find a prom or, order the $175 stock TPIS.com chip. cough... rip off

Re: BURNED OUT PROM?? MEMCAL

Have you considered converting to the later MAF ECM '165 and then using the $6E? It's a common swap and the info is available
