Need help with some basic MEMCAL understanding

I'm new to the PROM discussion in general, have been reading the reference material but still have some confusion setting up a MEMCAL for my 1227730 ECM.

Have a 30's Chevy coupe project....at around the 60% mark right now. Installed is a 350/700R4 with TPI (speed density). Have an after-market TPI wiring harness and 730 ECM. The current MEMCAL is for a 4 cylinder with chip ADDX (2.0L 4cyl).

Should I just toss the entire MEMCAL? Or can it be prepared into a V8 unit? I can buy EPROM 16163139 for around $90..but sounds like it needs to be soldered in the MEMCAL? Then what about the CALPAK situation...

Too make a long story short...does my 4cyl MEMCAL have any value for my situation...I'd like to end up with a totally enclosed ECM without external board attachments if possible…..or do I need to find the rare V8 MEMCAL?

Thanks
Ed

Update: Just pulled the MEMCAL and cover...looks like this one has all push in pins without solder?

Re: Need help with some basic MEMCAL understanding

If you want to have knock retard control you will either have to use an external ESC module (which you may already have) or get a different MEMCAL that has the ESC module built on to it (above the two smaller chips). Note that the two types (internal/external) use different knock sensors.

If you want to have limp home mode capability that runs half-way decent, and your engine isn't too far off from a stock motor, you will need a new MEMCAL for your particular engine. If you can do without limp home mode (or one that runs half-way decent), you can either disable code 51 in your PROM (if the mask you are running checks for cylinder select like $8D does--if not you don't need to worry about it) or you can modify your MEMCAL for 8 cylinder by jumpering pin 62 to pin 56 (pins 8 and 11 on the 14 pin chip).

Re: Need help with some basic MEMCAL understanding

Pop45398..Thanks for the response. I can get a new MEMCAL 16151348 programmed for my application for around $200. Seems like the way to go for me...considering everyone else wants over $275 just for the OEM MEMCAL.

When I started this project some time back they were selling for about $40..the cost went up faster than the price of oil! I bet some GM dealer has a few just collecting dust somewhere!
